Ben, I shot the 175's, 185's and 210's this weekend at 500 yards in a prone rifle chambered in 30-06 (Gilkes-Ross action, Bartlein 1:10" twist barrel). Shooting next to me was a top Palma shooter with his Palma rifle (Stolle Panda, Krieger barrel) and another very good shooter next to us with a .260 (Gilkes-Ross action, Krieger barrel). All three of us are High Masters and shoot together regularly, our scores are always very close. Wind conditions were mild in the beginning, then got much tougher as the day went on, the Bergers really came through.
In the first string, I shot 200-15X (witht he 175's), the Palma shooter shot 200-15X and the .260 shooter shot a 200-14X.
By the second string the wind was stronger, about 7 to 10 mph, some gusts and let-offs. I shot the 185's and scored a 199-9X, the Palma shooter had a 198-8X and the .260 shooter had a 197-11X.
The third string, a bit later was the wild one. The wind was in the 15 mph range, gusts and let-offs were fast and frequent. I shot the 210's and scored a 198-12X. The Palma shooter shot a 190-6X and the .260 shooter shot a 193-5X. Final scores were 597-36X for the 30-06 with the various Bergers, 590-30X for the .260 and 588-29X for the Palma rifle. All of us have shot 600 scores on this range with these rifles in decent conditions; this was a good test of wind reading and ballistics because we're well matched as shooters and all the equipment is first class.
Since we were side by side I could see how much closer to center I was staying when we got caught in a sudden change. I won't bore you with too many details because the scores say it all. If you aren't too familiar with prone Highpower, the 500 yard X ring is 5", the 10 ring is 10" and each successive ring is 5" bigger. All shooting was prone, iron sights, sling support only.
