Model 70 bolt question

Hi all. I have a Winchester model 70, 22-250 and I am pretty sure it is a short action. I don't know the bolt length difference between the short action and the long! I am thinking about re-stocking it as the stock is pretty beat up,(it's a 1977 model), and I would like to make sure I get the right length action cut for it! I like doing some wood work but I have never tried to carve a stock! And I'm not this time either! I am thinking about a Richards Microfit as I think from what I have seen on other forums, it might be a good project! So anyway if someone has the action difference between the long and short action, I would appreciate it! Thanks in advance.:) Doug

Thanks for the info! I will do some measuring to see what it is. I would imagine it will be 71/8" since it is a 22-250!:D Doug

I don't have this model 70. But I have hear that this pretty good in carve a stock. So I think you should try this one.

You might want to do a search of "Microfit" for some of his customer's comments. As with all comments on products, take things with a grain of salt, people tend not to post unless they're very happy or very mad. Still, trends do count.

I read a post on RFC,(Rimfire central) and one of the guys put a scout in one. and another put a varmint in one that was a laminate and it looked like a bumblebee! Both said there was minor woodwork, and the bumblebee stock the guy went ahead and bedded the rifle, so that added to the work. But yes I will do some research and at this time I think I can get the most "bang for the buck" with microfit!:D Doug

Not necessarily. There was a substantial period of time when all model 70's were long actions. Those chambered for short cartridges had a "blocked magazine box which was effectively shorter, but the actions were all the same length. I don't know what year the short actions appeared.
