Hi! there

I see a lot of people talking about mirages when they look at their targets through the scope. I Know what a mirage is, What i would like to know is what causes the a mirage when looking through a scope.

Thanks

Jonny,

Mostly, mirage is the normal kind, caused by localised heating of the air near the ground resulting in different air densities with different refractive indexes flowing in the wind. That kind you see towards where your scope is parallax corrected & is pretty much in full focus.

Occasionally, heat off the barrel will flow up thru your sight window in the scope if you haven't used a suitable device to combat that phenomonon. It will throw the sight picture out of focus.

The first can be used as an aid, once you get a handle on how it is likely to displace your shot. The latter is a pain in the butt.
