Mirage duplication

The nearest indoor range is 100's of miles away and I understand there is an indoor mirage. Can anyone sugest a way to visually duplicate or simulate the mirage as seen through a scope at the indoor shoots (without being at an indoor range)?

Thanks,
regis

Mirage is caused by a mixing of air of two different temperatures or densities which results in two different indices of refraction. If the indoor air is of constant density and temperature you should not see mirage. Where it would be particularly noticeable is if you were indoors shooting from a heated room through a window at an outside target where it was considerably colder.

Thanks Ken. I'm new to benchrest and most of the guys here have shot at Rocky River Barn at one time or another. All have talked about the difficulty in overcomming the "indoor mirage". I began thinking that perhaps there is something different about shooting indoors. Some folks use fans which makes it seem like th mirage is only near the gun. Others say the lights close to the target are the culpret. But, if there are just layers of air across the range, it wouldn't seem different than shooting accross any hot surface outdoors. But, there seems to be dis-agreement there.

Does anyone see a difference between indoor & outdoor?

Thanks,
Regis

You have the heat from the barrel to deal with a fan helps out alot. You also have mirage from the lights I hang my targets low.And not to mention the area where the target is hung is at least 10 degrees colder than where your scope is.Its not as easy as most people thinks it is and if they tell you it easy to shoot indoors tell them come to the PSL match on 2/7/09 and win them some money!! Mirage Tubes

work great in the Barn. David Kenimer just shot a new RBA indoor world record of 250-23X using a mirage tube that I make. They are listed in the classifieds here.

Look under optics and go to "other" you will find it there.

Cool thanks, guess my logical places are off. I would have assumed to find it either under equipment other or componets other, oh well. Thanks, will take a look.

Jody, are they all the same length? The clear one looks longer in the picture.

Yes, they are all the same length approximately 18". The black 1 pictured is the one that I use and I made it a little shorter. 18" should get you even with or past the muzzle on most applications and can be cut for your personal preference.

They are available for Leupold Competition series and Weaver right now, but I will soon have them available for Leupold 36 BR, March, and Night Force.

March now available

The Mirage Tubes are now available for March scope with a 52 mm objective lens.

Leupold 36 BR and Night Force 56mm NXS and BR coming soon.

Check classifieds for info.
