Mirage Boards ??

Ok, I'll admit, I am not sure what a mirage board looks like or were it is to be placed. I have only seen them used by a few out of state shooters and no one locally uses them. The few I have seen were totaly different designs. I'm guessing they must be of some bennefit for those that do know how to operate them. Any suggestions if one was so inclined to build a couple and try them out ? Size and placement? There is one range I shoot at frequently that can have the all mighty pea soup on occasion and if they would be of use I'd try it. I use the " Running " or " Boil " view in my scope under or over the target frame as a guide now. In Score shooting it seems to throw me off moving the rear bag around to lower or raise up the sight picture to get a good view of it and then back on the sighter or record target. Any thoughts ?

The mirage boards I carry w/ me in my shooting trailer are 9"x12" white vinyl w/ black stripes of 1 1/4" tape spaced 1 1/4" apart that have a hole in the top so I can screw them to the target frame. The stripes are horizontal acrossed the 9". The target system I built for Boone Valley Ikes has the same striping in between every target position, but that is an obviously larger area of coverage. Either one is going to allow you to visualize the direction, rate, and intensity of the mirage. Keep in mind, mirage is another wind flag. With the mirage boards, you can "see" it.

David,

There is no issues with putting them up on the frames ? Or are they kept bellow the line of sight from bench to bottom of target frame ? I agree whole hearted with mirage being a wind flag, reason for my interrest. I will often look for mirage when the flags seem to be lying to me. Thanx for the response. I will be building me a few of them.

There have been a few times I have had to resort to taping them to the frame because they didn't want them screwed in. Remember to bring your roll of 100 mph tape!!

Andy,
I had some printed up on 11"x14" heavy paper for our Registered VFS Shoots. We just staple them on both sides of the target so they are easy to use as you look at your target. When we are done we just pull the staples and they are ready to go for the next shoot.
Best,
