Minimum velocity?

In handloading for long range (600+ yards) is it correct to load for velocities 20% above the speed of sound at the target (say 1200 fps for SOS depending on temp and humisdity)? I am shooting 30-06 and starting next week at 600 yards for the first time. I am using the Nosler 180 grn BT bullet. From what I understand, I should start out loading for a velocity of about 1500 fps at the target. This will ensure the bullet stays supersonic all of the way. Is this a good entry point for handloading? I am seatinig on the lands (which I have been doing for 100 to 300 yards). My rifle is the "sows ear to silk purse" in the hybrid forum.

model 14,

The point is not to cross the finish line as slow as possible. Don't worry about target velocity

Load for least vertical at 300. If you shoot when the wind across the range and not a headwind or tailwind and ignore the horizontal component of the group size you'll get good info on what's working for you. If that's not convenient use 200. If you're limited to 100 yds for load development, go for small groups with low extreme velocity spread measured with a chronograph.

Full power loads will work best-don't try to load down. The only bullet that wobbles trans-sonic that I am aware of is the 168 Sierra match king. Even that bullet will work out of a long barreled 06 bolt gun all the way to 1K. The 168 Sierra works fine at 600. Is the Hornaday 180 gr you mention an A-Max?
