Mile shoot

Dumb question......There is no way for me to get to a mile with my 1K rig. Not enough adjustment in the scope for that. I shoot out to 1200 quite reguraly, and some times to 1400 with my hunting gun. The only way for me to get to a mile with that is to dial up, say 1400, set the power to 22 (NSX 8-32) and use the 9th hash mark (18 moa). Should that work, and does anyone use that method? My rig is a 300 wby using 210 bergers at 3050. Is there a better way, short of buying new equipment?

Quickload says that you'll be right at 1125 fps (at my home range in Boulder CIty Nevada - elevation 2,100 ft alt), so it will be altitude and weather dependent if you can get there and still be supersonic. The Bergers are supposed to be fairly stable in transition, so it looks pretty good - assuming that Quickload gets the velocity right.

Quickload says you'll need 62.25 minutes of elevation to get to 1,750 and 66.0 to get to 1,800. (1,760 is a mile). Dial as much as you got and then hold the rest. To verify its accuracy, it also says you need roughly 22.50 MOA to go 1,000 yards, and 30.50 MOA to go 1,200 yards.

Your proposed method of holding over for added elevation is corrrect from my perspective. That is exactly why you got the reticle that you did - so you can hold over, under and for wind without having to find some other equipment.

I once shot a 1,000 yard match with a .308 and no 20 Minute base, shooting the entire event holding over by approximately 20 minutes. It worked, but was not optimal. Needless to say, I had a 20 minute base on the rifle the next match I shot.

I wanted to add a separate reply for my results using EXBAL in predicting your results:

I used the following target range inputs (2,100 ft alt; 90 degress temp; 18% humidity; pressure at altitude 27.518).

Velocity at 1,750 yards - 1,229 fps; Elevation 57.75 MOA
velocity at 1,800 yards - 1,199 fps; elevation 61.00 MOA.

I have found that EXBAL is more accurate at predicting teh behavior of my 7WSM - using teh Berger 180s - then Quickload.

Under either Quickload or EXBAL, it will be close. Good luck.

I just did up a whole chart for dial up/ hold overs, but forgot to change to the correct elevation for the range there.:( What is the elevation at the Ohio range?

Tod,

Don't worry about it so much, you will be fine. Yes, at one time when I shot the mile I used the "adjust" the cross hair method and it worked fine. You will have plenty of time and I will spot for you if I'm not shooting at the time. We will get you on target if conditions allow it and your load is up for it.. Looking forward to helping you out. If you want, I will help you on Friday if you get here in time so on Saturday we know what to do.
