Metal Finish question, Mainly Bolts.

Kinda been wondering about this for a little bit, may be a dumb question, I am no way a metalworker I can weld farm equipment at work but that is the extent of that.

Anyways what do gunsmiths/ manufactures put on say a polished bolt, they are steel an polished to a high shine, how does is not rust? Is it just oiled. My project mauser 98 got me thinking.

I see metal art in big cities but that stuff is clear coated to stop rust.

Thanks

Some bolts are stainless, a couple titanium. The rest need some kind of oil, of which there are many, on them, to prevent rust. All bolts, of any metal, need lube to lessen friction. I like "Sheath" spray, which dries, leaving a lubricating film. Bluing helps a wee bit to slow rusting.

Titanium Bolts? Are you including semi autos and shotguns? Which manufacturer of bolt actions uses titanium for the bolt (or stainless for that matter)?

I was thinking about stripping one down and polishing it, I was just wondering if I had to put anything on it to keep it from rusting as bad. Seems to me that blued barrels rust a lost faster than the polished bolt.

Thanks guys for the input.

That's interesting. The Remington 700Ti had a Titanium receiver and carbon steel bolt. I remember calling Remington years ago to ask if the receiver had a steel insert in the front so that the bolt lugs didn't bear directly on the Titanium and I didn't get a clear answer. Anybody here ever rebarreled one?

I imagine that the Fanzoj rifles appeal to a different set of shooters.

Well I live in the northwest also and have several highly polished actions and barrels, and I don't put anything on them and have never had an issue at all with them rusting. The actions are all Stolle's and have polished aluminum exteriors, barrels are highly polished stainless, and bolts are steel. All of my rifles are kept in a safe in the garage and I do not use a dehumidifier or anything in the safe. My rail gun is on the floor of the garage stacked in a corner, and it is totally polished and I never have had an issue with any rust on it. It is in 2 wooden boxes so that protects it a bit. My blued rifles I wipe down with a silicone gun cloth. Long term storage there used to be a product called RIG that when I was deployed to other countries I would use it on stored rifles, of course then I lived close to the ocean and things tend to develop rust a bit quicker.

Scott,

I re-barreled a 700Ti about 2 years ago. It is the first and last one I will ever do. There is no steel insert. The titanium, with what ever heat treat Rem. gives it, is WAY too soft for rifle actions. The set back of the lug seats in the action I did was quite visible without taking any measurements. I headspaced it to the setback, but I'm sure it will continue to grow. Will never do another one.

RIG is good stuff! I found that mixing it with CLP makes a great protective lube for long term storage, that's easily applied without looking like you lubed it with a grease gun.

That was exactly my concern. I know firsthand that bare Titanium is not suitable as a bearing surface and needs to be lined with stainless steel on wear surfaces. Titanium hammers and slides have been marketed for 1911 pistols and they proved to be quite short lived.
