Bruno has melonited BAT actions..... does anyone here know what happened? Did they change steels or just decide it was OK to melonite them?

I can call them but they're busy, don't want to bug them.

Hmmm, I've got a fat 'M' here that I tried and tried to get permission to melonite a couple yrs ago..... I guess I need to get out my notes and see what steel it is and compare it to the steel currently being melonited.

I'm bugged by the fact that the more you pay for an action the stickier it gets, almost.

Al, I saw a couple that Dave Bruno has i think they were B's and bolt and action were done from Bat. They are slick……. jim

I have a good friend who has a few done from BAT. In my mind though how could they not be warped after that process and those temps? I asked a fella "whos name I wont revel" that does the melonite process for a living, about the heat and warpage. he didn't want to comment. I don't think I would do it myself, but there are several out there that have been done,
and I cant recall reading or hearing about a single issue. Lee

Al, I am very interested in this too. I emailed Bruce Thom and asked him for specifics. He responded that the melonited are stainless bodies with the standard chrome moly bolt. The option is an extra $110

I didn't think to ask if the steel is any different.

He makes his living doing this, other than that I don't no?
At what temp will stainless steel start to move? We all no that some factory actions can warp when heat threaded. At least that's what they say. What temp is a factory action when heat threaded? I don't no the answer myself. If melonite temps are equal or higher, what keeps the steel from possibly moving? Like I say I personally don't no, but these questions are solid ones I think.
Seems to me I read somewhere melonite is done around 1200 degrees?

I may try a barrel one day but I just don't feel comfortable doing this with a 1400$ action. Lee

I don't want to make any of this sound as if I know anything about heat treating and temperatures, as I do not. These are just questions I ask myself. Hot salt on an expensive action, just doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I guess I figure as long as I keep the proper lube on my lugs, and keep my action as clean as I can, what real benefit would I actually gain??
