Can anyone tell me how to remove a Decelerator Pad from a McMillan A4 stock??
Thanks, Floyd

From the back of the pad (facing the pad) find the two screw heads About and inch from the top of the pad center (push with your fingers) same from the bottom. When you locate the slits, grease a round shank reed & Prince screwdriver. Push into the center of the slits, until you find the screw head and tun the screw out. Repeat on the bottom screw. Tap with a non marring hammer from the side as the pad will have been spotted with adhesive (you have to break the bond).

This is how I removed the last one I did, to shorten the stock. Of course I had to use a new pad and grind the new angles.

Butt Pad

Thanks BigAl,
I followed your instructions until I got the part of finding the screws. There are'nt any. After poking around for 45 minutes with a probe I finally cut the pad off where the plastic plate and the pad meet and found there are'nt any screws, the plate and the pad are epoxy glued to the stock. Although there is a metal plate that has been drilled for screws where the pad and plastic meet. I guess they decided to just glue instead of screw and glue.
I found that a little disapointing coming from McMillan, beings that it was'nt screwed and considering how much their stocks cost.
I really do appreciate you trying to help though.
I suppose now I'll have to grind or saw the plastic plate off where the stock and buttplate meet.In case your wondering,I'm going to iinstall a 4-way buttplate in place of the recoil pad.
Thanks again, Floyd

I understand your concern but I've never seen an epoxied pad come off.

Unless I'm mistaken epoxying the pads is SOP at McMillins and many other shops across the country.

How and what with did you cut the stock , and how good of a job did it do. I need to cut one off and don't want to mess up and need to repaint .

I cut the pad off with a very sharp serrated steak knife where the pad met the plastic butt plate, but it did destroy the pad. They tell me to use a fine tooth band saw or belt sander to remove the plastic plate. I'm goimg to let my smith do that part then add an adjustable 4 way.
Good Luck,
Floyd

I realize you've gone and done what you did, but wouldn't the first place to ask have been McMillan themselves?

The A4 stock I removed the pad from may have been someone else's work. This stock came into me some 10 years ago. To cut the stock down a belt sander works better than a saw, this holds true for any synthetic stock (at least for me) I really prefer to use a 12" disk sander, the same as I will grind the new pad for the stock after I shorten it.

And Yes, it's always better to call the stock maker with your questions. McMillan always bends over backwards to give you the best information. Good folks there!

Just like using Marine Tex for bedding compound.:D
