I'm looking at a very nice Clausing 6913 with 48 inches between centers. Besides the overall length of the machine, I have reservations about the length of the spindle for barrel work, it's 26 or 27 inches from the handwheel to the end of the chuck.
I'm wondering if the handwheel can be removed to make room for a spider on the outboard end of the spindle, and whether a spider on the inboard end will shorten things up enough to permit barrel work through the headstock.
The spindle has just a very short length outboard of the handwheel hub where a spider could be attached with clamp screws - that doesn't give me a real warm feeling about the integrity or precision of an installation like that.
The machine has all the original tools it was sold with. There is no collet closer, so I'm wondering whether I can find one, collets I'm not too concerned about.
Thanks for any help and advice.
