Mauser bolt question ?

What are the protrusions for at the end of a Mauser bolt, on either side of the ejecter slot opposite the ejector clamp ? I see them on military Mausers but not on commercial one's. Just curious.

According to Stuart Otteson's The Bolt Action (Vol 1) they're for cartridge support to keep the case head from slipping sideways away from the extractor when it comes out of the magazine.

Larry, thank you. They're certainly in the right place to serve that purpose. Now everybody knows.

Mr Otteson deserves all the credit, I only bought the book a long time ago and can remember where it is - still. :D

I know they break off when your brother takes your 7mm Mag, gets drunk and shoots a 270 Win round out of it.

It flips the case out when you pull the bolt back and the brass hits the ejector.

One of the nice features of a Mauser-style bolt is when you pull the bolt back slowly, the bench-rest/sniper can grab the expent brass.

When one of the tips was broken off, the cartridges wouldn't always load or eject properly. The 'smith recommended not welding it back on, and he replaced the bolt body and cocking piece. Fortunately, the Parker Hale 1200 is pretty close to Interarms Mark X. So I picked one up and he machined it to fit.
