if a box of bullets is supposed to be "match" grade, why does the overall length vary, the measurment from the ojive is pretty much the same, should i not be concerned with bullet oal?

Nipper, Why not ask the bullet maker why his "match grade" box of bullets vary in overall length? His answer might be interesting. Match grade takes on a different meaning with some, and the quality isn't always up to the standard one would expect. Art

They pinch trim the jackets to length and that is not an exacting method.

I've found that bullets varying in OAL seem to make no difference in point-blank benchrest (100-200-300 yards), as long as

(1) the variation comes from how the jackets were trimmed (i.e., the shank is the same length, and the ogive starts at the same point, boat tail (if any) is the same, etc., and

(2) The seating die doesn't pick up the bullet where the variation can affect bullet jam/jump -- i.e., doesn't work from the tip.

It can make a difference in 1,000 yard BR, esp. if you do more work on the bullets, such as meplat closing, repointing, etc.

If the use of the bullets is not for benchrest, I can't see it mattering a whit.

YMMV

Edit: because of variances, bullets from different lots are really beyond the control of even the custom bullet makers. Don't mix boxes, unless you check. There *may* be no difference, but no guarantees -- no whining if they're not the same.
