Match Report – Aug. 4th 2012
The day started out with perfect conditions…at 7am when I was working on the new FT course, the wind was dead calm and it was a pleasant 68 degrees. By noon, it was close to a 100 degrees. But as usual, the wind increased as the day warmed up… ending the day with gusty winds up to 15 mph, that varied in velocity and direction by 180 degrees, as a thunderstorm brewed in the distance
Jim Cyran made the 4hr drive (each way), up from the Sacramento area. What a pleasure it is to have Jim shoot with us… even when he beats our butts in Open class field target, shooting in Hunter, with a 12 power scope.
Chris Lovitt journeyed down from Grants Pass and joined Mark, Bob and I to round out the contestants. Mark and Bob didn’t want to shoot BR and focused on finishing up the FT course. Thanks guys, that was a lot of work on a very hot day!
By the time we started shooting bench rest at 9am, the wind was just starting to show itself with gentle switching but was pretty easy to read… but by the second and third cards we really had a challenge, and we all got caught shooting just as the wind did a 180 switch. It’s such a joy to be holding left of the 10 ring and laying in those Xs, and then on your next shot have it go left of where you’re aiming .. then seeing the flags switch just after your shot
Speaking of flags, Chris brought down his new version of an older design, and it was very accurate in predicting velocity and direction.. and more importantly, WHEN TO SHOOT . We all began to count on it. You’ll just have to come on over if you want to see it. Hint, it’s a little like what Dan Brown is making.. more funky, but effective.
Chris and I thought we were in a tie at the end of the first match, except he had me on X count… Still he didn’t want an almost tie, so we shot another three cards each after we shot the field target match. (When I was writing the report, I saw that someone added up Chris’s cards wrong, and he was one point behind me.) The winds were really going strong by that time as the storm came closer.
Jim shot his EV2, for BR and his LD –USFT Hunter for FT.
Chris shot his FWB P70 FT for both BR HV class and FT in open class
Mark shot his AA400 in WFTF class for the FT match.
Bob shot his highly tuned Maruader in Open class for the FT match.
I shot my LD- USFT #86 in HV BR and USFT #57 in Open class FT
