Match Chambers

So, I've finally gotten around to rebarreling my 3p/prone gun. The barreled action, from a 1413 prone gun, is dated 1965. Wow. It will shoot in the .3's at 50 yards off my elbow but at 100 yards groups are pretty aweful, even off of a bench. So I figure it's time to change

Anyway, the topic at hand - I have ordered a blank from Lilja but I have been confounded by reamer selection. I can't seem to find any concurring opinions on what works. The two reamers I have considered most are the Anschutz and Lilja reamers, specs below.

Anschutz Lilja
Leade .5* 1.5*/2*
Freebore .2248 .2240
Base .2255 .2252

I can get a custom reamer just as easily, but that option doesn't mean much to me if I don't know what to get. So, first of all, what do you guys have that works? What have you seen that works?

Thanks,
Mark Nations

Mark why do anything...yet. From what you described so far I sure would play with what I have for a while as in, test from a bench, with rest, over flags, with a tuner, maybe a couple lots of ammo. You can always drop lots of cash, just make sure you need to IMHO.

Chamber-

Lilja had a barrel with his chamber win the Olympics in Grece a while back, the gold.

I've been tweaking it for about 2 years now, but I've become convinced that it just won't work the way it is. All of my group testing is done off of a rest with flags. As this is also my indoor 3P gun, I would rather not have to use a tuner, although I have found that using my 8" bloop tube shrinks groups across the board (a little). My best groups at 100 yards have been in the .6's shot with Match EPS, Midas L, and Midas M (they all shoot roughly the same after some fouling shots). Tennex has been spotty - some groups are great (.156 3-shot group), but are not repeatable. Next year I'll be shooting in college, so I'd like to start with something known.

Emmons did win in Athens with a drop-in Lilja barrel. Certainly the barrel did its part, but he was on fire, I don't think anything could have stopped him (even gun sabotage).

No one? Has anyone had any expirience with the Lilja chamber? It seems to be fairly successfull (and I like the design), but I'm concerned that some of my ammo won't chamber very well (I shoot SK and cheap Eley at 50 feet)...

JMO but if you are getting groups in the .6" range at 100 yds there aint nothing wrong with your rifle. if you are gonna rechamber i'd use a Calfee spec reamer. why use anything else?

Well lets try this another way, IF you are determined to rebarrel this thing I'd suspect you would be much farther ahead getting a proven smith with a track record to cut the chamber with HIS reamer.
While you did not specify as to whether you were going to do this, If your under the impression that you are just going to run a nice new reamer in there and have a 1st rate match chamber well, uh,...... your not.

Maybe you could get with one of the top smiths, like Bill Myers, and discuss with them what you would like to accomplish.

More than likely they will pick a reamer that has been proven on a number of BR rifles already.

I think there is alot more to the system than just reamer selection, and with their skill they will take care of all the other details as well.

Myers, Leger, Messer, ect.. there are alot of good smiths that will get you on the right path.

New Chamber

What's already been said, take it to a reputable 'smith and have it chambered to suit the ammo of your choice. Also, you will probably find that before you do any of this, use top end ammo and it may surprise you. Sure, use el cheapo for plinking, but the results are most likely not representative of the rifles true capabilities.

Actually, I did intend to do the work on this barrel myself. I've done 2 barrels for my X-course AR15, and had tremendous success with them. I just find it difficult to pay a 'smith to do what I can do myself.

It sounds like a good idea to get the opinion of some proven 'smith(s) though. But how can I get in contact with any of them? None of them seem to have websites or contact information of any kind...and I don't suppose they publish their reamer prints...
