I have a brand new Interarms Mauser Mark-X action and a good BR stock.
Is this action acceptable to make up a single shot 6 mm BR bench rest rifle?

If you want to shoot serious BR, no. If you just want to have fun, OK. The 6BR case gives up just a bit in the accuracy department to the 6ppc. Close but not quite there. Been there done that, didn't work. If you join the National Benchrest Association you will get the monthly newletter. I have never seen a 6BR in the equipment list from different matches. For group shooting it is almost all 6ppc, once in a while a 22-100 will show up. The 6BR is however a fine cartridge for 600 yards and up shooting 95-107 grain bullets.

Probably not. I suspect the action you have has a bolt for a .473 cartridge head diameter, i.e. 6BR, 243 Win, 308, 30-06, etc. The ppc case is a bit smaller in diameter being about .440 or so. Depends on the extractor, it might pull a ppc case. If you are stuck with this action you will probably have to use a cartridge that fits the bolt face. If the action happens to have a bolt for the .223 family you are still stuck, but might be able to open the bolt face up to fit the ppc case. Looks to me like you will be stuck with the 6BR. This is about as close to the 6ppc as you can get with your action. That is without a lot of work. You can build a decent shooting rifle in 6BR but it will not be competitive in actual competition. Kind of like turning a sows ear into a silk purse, as the old saying goes. You can do it with enough money, but by then you will have spent enough to buy a proper Benchrest rifle with a custom action, stock, trigger, etc. I tried it myself and yes the rifle shot good but nowhere competitive. It was a good learning experience, I keep telling myself. :(

Donald - Thanks for your input. I purchased this action about 15 years ago but I never had time to do anything with it. I have always been intrigued with the 6 mm BR and PPC and I wanted to build one up. I guess that I will unload the Mark-X action and try to pick up a more appropriate action for a 6 PPC.

My recommendation for a true Benchrest action is Stiller's Viper Drop Port. Don't have to worry about ejected cases. Thats just my personal preference as it comes with rings and trigger gard. There are of course many other fine actions as are advertised on this forum. One thing I really like about a Benchrest action is the milled in scope mount rail. There are several that have this feature besides the Viper.

You could go with a 30br. The 30BR is really gaining in respect even for group shooting. very accurate chambering. The 30BR will most likely be more accurate than a 6BR and maybe just maybe as accurate as a ppc. Other than this sell and re- invest. Lee
