Lyman LWBR Scope

Hey all,

Is a Lyman LWBR scope that has been upped in power to a 36x a good scope to use for competitive benchrest shooting or should I just stick with the good ol' T36?

Thank you all in advance,
Bill

Just a guess but I would be concerned about the tunability of a barrel with a scope mount on it.

If the LWBR has coin slot turrets I'd go with the Weaver in a heartbeat. If it has target turrets added (there were a few aftermarket turrets made) then I'd buy the Lyman over the Weaver. I have both and the old Lyman is a superb scope with very fine crosshairs and is terrific. Its a pita to adjust tho. I keep looking for a set of the target turrets for it....maybe someday. Neither compares to the Lyman STS tho...thats the one that mounts on the barrel blocks and has external turrets.

Anyone know of a current source for both the turrets and bumping up services for the LWBR?

Parson's scope service in OH used to be the specialist for Lyman scopes, with a complete line of parts. However, I do not know if they do any boosting of power.

Thanks. Last time I asked him Gil Parsons does not do bumping up and he has no original Lyman target turrets (if they ever existed???). Gil is good, but only as good as his parts supply allows. Gil is working on a 25 SuperTargetSpot for me right now. bob finger

scope

Don,
The LWBR is not a barrel mounted scope, its receiver mount so shouldn't effect a tuner.

Bob,
Target turrets came standard on the LWBR scopes. The Lyman AA did not have the turrets though the scopes were basically the same. After market turrets were made for the AA/LWBR at one time and they come up occasionally.
Yes Bob they exist.

I had a couple LWBR's that were "boosted" but I believe it was Parson that indicated to me that, at least at that time, that was not the thing to do because the additional lens cell is permanantly epoxied inside the tube and once that is done you can no longer service the scope internally (clean, reticle work).

The LWBR's could also be had in either 1/4 or 1/8 min. adjustments and any variety of reticles.

I would prefer a Lyman but not one that was bumped up.

Brian: Thanks for the education. So I have AA and not LWBR. Interesting and once again shows how easily we can confuse these things. I'll keep looking for a set of target turrets for my AA. It is one of the better scopes I own. bob finger

Lyman

Bob,

As I recall the 20X AA preceeded the LWBR and was made during the same time period along with the LWBR, the main difference being the turrets and fine adjustments. The add on turrets were also made prior to the LWBR which may have been a factor in the factory turrets.
The LWBR was made in 20X, 25X and 35X, so they are out there, finding them is a different story.

What is the consensus then of Unertal scopes and their use on target rifles.garrisone.

Optical boosters ?

I read an add for a 3x optical booster, a lens and rubber sleeve thats slips over the eye piece. The booster changes a 10 power to a 30 power scope. Would this work on one of the older fixed power scopes? thanks joe :)

Lwbr

Stephen,
I had a Siebert boosted 25X to 36X. I'm not sure why it was done unless it was prior to Lyman making a 35X. I wasn't happy with it.
Target turrets came on LWBR's, possibly the earliest didn't but I don't think so because the turrets were the main LWBR selling point. I believe the AA used aftermarket turrets prior. They also came on the MS scopes Lyman made.

An ad from 1972 lists the AA-20X scope for benchrest, SB or HP target. I believe this is what preceeded the actual name LWBR. These required the after market turrets.

Joe: The Davis optical booster will boost a 10 to about 13x and a 20 to about 23X (assuming you purchase the 3x booster). 3X does NOT mean three times the power! I had one on my Lyman 20X AA for a while. It increased the reticle thickness a bit too much for my taste. The long range guys like them. For me shooting at 50M I did not see enough of a change to warrant continued use. It stays in my shooting box. I'll likely put it on a scope and try it again sometime. Perhaps its my eyes...they are not the best in the world and I'm shade blind (partial color blindness) so that might be a good part of it.

I'm a wee bit envious of those of you who have the LWBR's. I'll keep looking for one. bob finger

If this was just horshoes...........

Thank you Mr. Finger.... well i had a good plan aworkin, *had*! now i wish i had ordered a 4x. thanks joe :)

I think I was the only one ignorant enough to sugest that but at least I put the disclaimer at the front that it was just a guess...8>)
