Lyman 20x Scope-Egg Shoot ???---

I have an older Lyman 20x LWBR Scope that is in near mint condition.
Would that make a fair scope to use in a 500 yard Egg Shooting Match
or would it be better to have the power upped to 30-35x and about
what would that cost ? Would that hurt the value of the scope ?
Also would there be much of a chance in using a .222 or a .222 Magnum
in one of those matches at that range ? I know they're not the best
in the wind at long ranges but would probably be better than a lot of
.30-06 recoil.

Thanks

I use a 20X Lyman shooting 600 yard F-class. It is just enough scope to center on the 6" ten ring. I don't think 20X is enough power to center on an egg. Don't spend the money to modify your Lyman, just buy a $69 Tru Glo 36X from Natchez. They are cheap scopes, but they work okay as long as there is good light. There are a lot of cheap scopes out there that work, so you can leave your Lyman in stock condition.

Not exactly sure what type of rules go along with your 500yd egg shoot but I've busted a few eggs at 200-300yds at shoots.

IF your'e allowed sighters before going for the egg 20X definately won't cut it.
Under those circumstances you need to see your bullet holes in the sighter not just the egg.

If your serious about this endeavor buy once cry once. I use a 12 x 42 NightForce on a factory Savage 204R just so I can see those little 20 cal. holes at 300. 36X works for me too. My 8.5 X 25 Loopy forced me to drop out of the match as I could'nt see my hits on paper. Just something to consider.

Even without sighters you'll be way underpowered against an egg at 500 with 20X.

Prince 555,
It sounds like you already have the 222 or 222 mag. They just wont cut it at 500 yd egg. Nor will a $69 36X scope. If you really want to have a chance at hitting the egg then you have got to have some serious equipment. Too much to go into here but look at some of the other equipment used by people who compete. but by all means go to a shoot and talk with people. Someone just might let you borrow a rifle to try. Good people at competitions.
