LV weight?

What must a gun weight in at to qualify from LV? I am consider a Savage 6BR in a LRPV or 12 F-class as my introduction gun to BR. No I don't expect it to be competitive. Life as a parent with young boys in sports doesn't allow for a lot of Saturday/Sunday range or match time. But I want to play with a minimum investment for the future. These guns feel pretty heavy to me. I know the 30" barrel on the 12 F-class wouldn't make it, but I would be swapping the factory tube out for a 21" custom in either case.

So, without the scope/rings, what does a gun need to weight in at to qualify?

Thanks, tiny

Without

.knowing what scope and rings you plan on using you'll not get too much usefull info here. The complete rifle ,ready on the line to shoot in a NBRSA LV match cannot weigh more than 10.54 pounds!

scope weight

I figured I would use either one of my SuperSnipers 16x or 20x (21 oz) or an older Burris 6-18x fine post (little less that 20 oz, but don't know exactly). Weaver style two piece bases with Burris Signature rings.

No NightForces or March in my current budget. Might could swing a Leupoud 30x in a year or so. I have seen some reason used prices on those. All my other scopes at 15x or under with hunting style reticles.

Again, I just want to start the learning curve. I know it will be steeper since time doesn't allow me to jump in with both feet.

thanks, tiny

Savage Weights

Wow, I just checked the Savage website for the weights of the rifles I was considering. A 12 VLP with a 26" varmint barrel weights in a 10 lbs. The 12 LRPV with a 26" 1" straight tube weights in at 12 lbs. And the 12 F-class with a 30" tube weights in at 13.30.

What does a 1" tube weight per inch? I think the 12 VLP might be the only one with a chance of making LV.

What are the restrictions on HV?

shorted barrel

Heavy Varmint Maximum is 13.5 pounds. That 26 inch barrel is way too long You seldom see one longer than 22 in 100-200 benchrest

Understood. I don't know how much weight I would lose by putting on a 21" tube instead of those longer factory barrels. HV I could make without problems, but I think it would be close with the LV. Maybe the 12VLP would have a chance with a 21" tube.

Thanks for the comments. tiny

Getting started on a budget.

Ok....

Tiny, don't worry about making weight with the Mod factory rifles...
This is a "Get your feet wet" practice/fact finding ordeal to determine wether
100/200 Score/Group, NBRSA/IBS registered matches is what you may want to do...

If ya don't make weight, no prob. You can STILL shoot in the matches, just you will be at the bottom of the standings with the penalty assessed to your agg. You can still figure your 100/200agg and Grand to see if your agg is to your expectation...

JMOP........ Save your money on a Savage Target action... Use you Stevens
action put it in the best BR type stock you can afford. Next, by a highend barrel (Shilen, PacNor, Douglas...etc) in 6BR .272nk 1-14 twist OR a no turn 6ppc, if the maker can get ya one done in a reasonable time.... OR in a .223... Given a solid accurate platform, the .223 is capable.

Though, the VLP stock is a solid tracking varmint stock, just needs help up front in the form of a 3" forend (think it's 2 1/2 wide and rounded slightly).

Least you'll have something to shoot and ..... Have a good time.!

Most important, make as many matches as ya can. You'll see different rests, actions, bags, stocks, loading equiptment, flags of all types...
Different shooting styles loading techniques..etc.

Luther, Ok all group NBRSA registered shoots....

Now Denton, Tx both Score and Group shot at 100 or 200yds alternating months. <<< these are unregistered club shoots... Best of all the shoots are 25.00 and draw top shooters who treat it as a registered match.. Lotta fun!

Yes, Denton does have registered Gulf Coast matches as well.
Come on out, I send ya directions if needed.

I bet you could sell that F class rig to somebody and get a good used BR rig that will be competitive for not much more money. there's always a good panda LV to be had for short green at most matches. if you get bit by the bug you'll have to do it eventually anyway and it'll save you money in the long run.
