I lost a mentor and friend. Those that attended the Bench Rest Rifle Club of St. Louis - 7th Annual "East-West Show-Me Shootout" probably saw many competition guns laid out on the far eastern tables for sale. These were part of an estate sale for a recently deceased shooter. His legacy was far more than those guns.
The shooter did not want an obituary or big memorial. But seeing those inanimate objects laid out on the table brought back memories and tears.
I am relatively a new competitive shooter. Only been at this less than 5 years.
When I showed up at our club wet behind the ears, Steve took me under his wing. He patiently taught me about bag set-up and tracking. When I finished my custom benchrest build. Steve spent a whole day with me teaching me how to do load development. He patiently taught me how to remove parallax out of my scope.
Steve’s generosity was huge. He gave a friend of mine a custom benchrest rifle so he could compete. He gave me a complete front rest to speed my progress along.
His death came suddenly and I never had a chance to say thank you properly.
I have tried to follow his example. This is the second season I have a rifle loaned to a new shooter to shoot with. But boy Steve’s shoes are impossible to fill. Steve I have not used your last name because I want to honor your wishes but you sure are missed.
Mentors still alive deserving thanks are Richard Griffin and Glen Hachey. Thanks for answering all the dumb questions with patience. Both of you are Champion Shooters and World Class gunsmith’s. The tweaking on my rifles has been invaluable.
My Griffin built 6BR below. Richard is a class act and nice guy.
