I think the first thing you should be thinking about is the gunsmith. Look at the gunsmiths used by the top shooters, select your smith and contact him and listen. He will tell you about the actions, barrels, stocks that he prefers to work with and will recommend those components with which he is having the most success. My rifles are built by Gordon Eck and he builds world class rifles and will build them for anybody. His sporters are simply the best you can have. I don't think that is even in debate anymore. His heavy rifles are also world class. The winner of last year's IR50/50 Nationals. Bob Raide, shot an Eck built sporter and 10.5/13.5 lb heavy rifle.

I do some testing for Gordon and can assure you that some of the most accurate rifles he has built have been sold to new shooters. He doesn't play favorites and save the best barrels for his favored customers. You get the luck of the draw on barrels that he has slugged and accepted as meeting his quality standards. I tested a couple of barreled actions that he placed into his own stock last week, that are going to be sent to customers in Australia, and they are both super shooters. I can tell you a story of a killer rifle he built for himself last year that he sold to a new shooter (whom he offered it to cause it didn't want to see that fellow struggle with inferior equipment). That new shooter shot a 750 agg. with it shortly thereafter.

If you really want to talk components, I can give you my preferences; having shot lots of different actions, barrels, and stocks. I like the Turbo action (both sporter and single shot actions), I'm really excited about the new Muller Barrel Works (Rock Creek) barrels (the one's I've shot recently have been consistently excellent) and I like the McMillan Edge stocks for a heavy rifle and the Pippin or Peightal sporter stocks. Now those are my preferences. I don't mean to imply that other gunsmiths or components are not of high quality or are not capable of winning. There are several other great gunsmiths and components being used to build winning rifles and I'm sure you'll hear about them too.

I couldn't agree more. Gordon is a pleasure to do business with. He will take what ever time is necessary to help a new guy understand the process and absolutely makes sure that he is satisfied with the build himself before it is offered to the customer.

Gordon Eck !

Yes Sir. A fine gentleman, & a truley Top Shelf gunsmith. I had the honor to be watched, while I struggled with infieror equipment by Mr. Eck. That's rite....Im the guy mentioned by Bill. Gordon Eck sold me HIS rifle! A real beauty! A 10x x3 heavy with a shillen barrel & the work's. That 750 agg. came at the second match for me with this rifle, it was actually a 750 60x on July 7 2012 at Warwarsing ny. That rifle shot a consecutive 1250 that day. The 750 60 was a ul agg. It was my second year at ir 50/50 And I couldnt be prouder , or more thankfull to Mr. Eck. Since then, Im proud to say Mr. Eck and I have become good friend's. As a gunsmith, I would recomend Gordon Highly. He is Honest, Hard working, & he dont play no Games! A straight shooter if ever was one.
