Right now I have the Mitutoyo 513-504 test indicator and would like a longer stem. Is one available for this model or would I have to get a different indicator. I would prefer to keep the graduation at .0001. Where would the best place to get these?

I don't understand how you can keep the graduations the same and go to a longer indicator point...?

I am going to make a longer point for mine as I don't really care what the graduations end up at, I am only trying to dial in to center as best possible...

The math says if you change the lenght of one side of the pivot, then you loose the current resolution/ direct indication.
There are longer ones, but they are all .0005 as far as i know.
Do a search on this forum.

I realize that the graduations would change so I figure I will need a different indicator but haven't seen one with a long stem.

just how long is long

Look up long island test indicators:)

Long stem for the Mitutoyo 513-540 Indicator

I used a company here in Phoenix called Phoenix Small Tool. They fitted my Mitutoyo 513-540 with a 1.5 inch stem and sent a recalibration table on an index card with it. It obviously does not give the same .0001 resolution per graduation but initially we are only trying to read concentricity. I use it for reaching into the barrel blank to get it indicated in prior to drilling my rough out hole for the reamer. After that I change back to the short tip and readjust if necessary the barrel set up using the 513-540 at the site of the planned chamber neck, prior to boring the drilled hole for the reamer. The long tip I have is all carbide and despite the material it has some flex when trying to indicate because of its 1.5 length. If I had it to do all over again. I would probably have saved my money and learned to use the standard tip. But because I spent the money, I feel obligated to put myself through the pain of using it. Doc Marsh

Only concentricity? My ass Pal, if you can reach and measure past the throat the better the outcome. Rad

Correction on the model number for the Mitutoyo

Sorry the model number on my post above should have read 513-504. Just as an aside, two years ago I did buy a Swiss Tessa indicator with a 1.5 inch length indicator tip. It reads to .00005, yes that is not a misprint a half of a tenth. I custom ordered it through Phoenix Small Tool. I regret to say that it cost more than the price of two barrel blanks. However it has to be set up with a dovetail holder and magnetic base The setup is not as rigid or as quickly aligned as holding the Mitutoyo 513-504 in a drill chuck in the tail stock. In addition after 1 hr of trying to get the barrel blank concentric to within half a tenth. I was determined to produce my first hummer by precision measurement. I put the indicator back in its little wooden box from Switzerland and back in my instrument cabinet. Where it still sits today. I quickly learned that you can wish for an indicator so precise that it can total frustrate you. I got out the Mitutoyo 513-504 and finshed the barrel. Doc Marsh
