What is the proper channels/requirements to follow in regards to an owner of a long gun selling, transfering and shipping to a new owner? I am asking in regards to BATFE guidelines within the US of A.

Thanks,
Mike

Face to face in your state is legal without paperwork. Also in most states it is legal to ship in state without paperwork. Check your state regs. If shipping out of state it needs to go to a FFL.

seems the logical and prudent thing would be to check the website of the agency you mention, or call them. If I want to know the building code in my town, I call the building dept. in my town.

Shipping To Kalifornia

If any of you guys are thinking about shipping into california and haven't had the pleasure as of yet make sure you log onto the CA. DOJ webside and print out a CFLC letter for an interesting reason If I receive a gun at my shop without the letter there is really no penalty, If you ship into CA without a letter the doj will be having a little talk with you about it when they find about it. So stay safe and make sure your paperwork is in order and by the way coming up on the november ballot here in calli they are trying to make it a law where you will register your long guns the same way that a handgun is registered. Watch out for the Man. Justin 07 FFL in Kalifornia

If the buyer is out of state and not in some people's republic like Kalifornia, NY, or IL you'll need a signed FFL copy from the person receiving the rifle/shotgun. Then you can ship the gun to them. Make sure that you bring the signed FFL along because the shipper may well want to see it especially if it's not being shipped to a place that is not obviously a gun shop by name.

If the buyer is in state in most states it's not a problem, and unless you live in a large state where the drive might be impractical you might meet someplace halfway and transfer it in person. That way you won't have to worry about shipping damage or theft which can happen even in the best of families.

I must admit that for most purposes it is easier to transfer a rifle in Canada than in the USA, talk about gun control!
