I have a 34" 338 barrel that is 1.25" straight contour that i going to put on a Rem 700 action. Although i have seen quite a few Rem 700's with 32-34" barrels that have shot very well with the same diameter and no barrel block my gunsmith is concerned that is to much barrel to use without a block. I was planning to bed about 6 inches of the barrel. I have seen 30 " barrels of that diameter on 700's on a aluminum benchrest stock free floated the whole length that shot tiny groups so i am thinking what i want to do will work. What is you guys opinion.

Lighten the barrel up by putting a tapered contour on it.

That's my first thought.

2nd, as tough as a Remmy is, I speculate it'll bow up like when you pet a cat's back with that much tomato stake hanging off the front of it. Either bed a portion forward of the recoil lug or whittle up a big ol "main cap" to help the receiver out a bit.

Good luck.
