log book

hey Francis

I would love to read the why I didn't win column.I'm running out of excuses:D

Midnight Wake Up

Francis, you forgot (name deleted) used one time.
Got a midnight wake-up call in error at the motel. Showered, got dressed and went to the range saying, "boy, sure is dark this morning"

Notes

82boy,
I keep horrible notes(scribbles),so you might want to hit the delete button right NOW !
I use a little spiral notebook and a lot of orange masking tape.
One rifle,one barrel,one bullet,one primer,one powder. Notes are easy !
Measure Jam-----to just touch and everything in between.write it down.
Keep track of round count( I mark primer boxes,100-200 etc)
Neck tension, seating depth, powder charge, conditions, and group size.If you have practice targets like Bud Mundy sells(rows of mothball bullseyes) shoot em in order, retrieve your targets and transfer load data to the target sheet.
Temp,Humidity,Time of day.
That Hot Blond's phone number.
It seems when I'm shooting poorly I have enough notes to sink the Bismark, when I'm shooting well the note page is blank.

Joel,

What's the orange tape for?? Tabs?

BTW, It's when you're shooting WELL that you're supposed to write it down! :D

82boy: I made up a "shooting log form" in MS Word that I put into a 3-ring binder. I have it posted here. You can, of course, modify it as you see fit.

For the column "wind" I draw a little wind rose graphic to tell the direction of the wind. The "condition rating " column relates to the little known, "Stover Scale". It is akin to the Beaufort or Richter scales :D, but is intended to quantify the difficulty of the conditions. Anyway, a "1" is perfect conditions and a "10" a horror show. Obviously, one person's "10" may be a "3" to someone else - just like with women!

Al,
It's kinda stupid, but the orange tape goes on the 25 rd loading block so I can try different seating depth, powder charge etc, and remember what I did. the orange tape changes as the barrel ages( it's not uncommon for me to go into a match with a 2500 rd + barrel[it's a poor f#c%er thing]). Not writing things down is like the ultimate nirvana release, and shooting becomes art not science! like I said, feel free to hit the delete button anytime you want!

no, I'm ac'trally kinda' diggin' it...........

I don't know why you're defensive about your use of tape on your block, I've got several barrels with descriptive tape. It doesn't get wiped off like Magic Marker and it looks more professional as long as you trim it off nice. I like a kindofa racing angle, same on both ends, totally trapezoidal....the real inside scoop is to roll the tape onto some smooth plastic (like the side of a milk jug if you've got one to spare) and then you k'in write the letters real neat. It ends up looking just like one of Borden's custom jobs that he does with that fancy engravermeister mo'chine.

Now that "ultimate nirvana release" thing scares me a little......only thing it brings to mind is the morning after too much Mexican food. Somehow I don't think that that's the image it was meant to evoke..........

But that's just ME :D

I once walked by Jack Neary's loading area...

..... and saw his log book laying there OPEN during a match. I couldn't resist.

Jack had all the appropriate load data, seating depth, neck tension, which bullet, etc. Jack wrote this information and a comment after each group fired

In the comment section Jack had such things as: "looked a little wind sensitive", or "pretty decent group", or "should go out on seating depth".

And in the comment section immediately after "needs more powder" in a font significantly large than all the previous writings was one solitary descriptive comment: "OUCH" :D
