i picked up a remington XCR compact with the 20" barrel in .308 back in december. now that shootin time is drawing near i want to start working up some loads for it. im not very good at load development and was wondering if anyone on here may have a suggestion of a good place to start from.

Right now i have Berger 168 VLDs, some nosler custom brass i picked up at cabelas that looks pretty good, CCI BR2 primers, and some leftover H335. i plan on switching to Varget ive heard its good. and ive got some lapua on backorder (go figure)

im looking to shoot at 500-600yds. any suggestions on some loads for a .308 with a 20" barrel and a deep throat using varget and berger VLDs?

You should find a sweet spot somewhere between 43 and 45 grains of Varget with the 168s. Seat 'em long.:D

thanks. im guessing since i have the short barrel its gonna take a little more bang to reach the fps need.

has anyone had luck with lighter bullets in short barrels? or other types of powders?

P.S. how far out of the lands is good? .010? i pushed the bullet into the neck by hand, colored it with a marker, and then used the bolt to seat it against the lands. then i threw that in my rock chucker, screwed the seater down till it touched and went about a 1/4 turn past that. sound like it may work?

40.6 and 41.4gr H335 Similar to H4895 Except Ball Powder, Try Seating to 2.81" OAL. 41.4 Is a good place to start with 150,168,175 gr With Reloader 15, IMR 4895-H4895, Varget.

My best loads are Sierra 165 grain Gamekings and either 45.5 grains of Varget or 46.5 grains of RL15. Brass is Lapua or Federal. The RL 15 load typically clocks at about 2800 fps out of a 24 inch Remington.

Try this...

I've had great luck with 135 grain custom bullets and 44grn of VVN-140. Guy Chism started me on the load years ago and it works great .005" to .010" off the lands. Rifle is Rem 700 factory heavy barrel cut down to 19.5". Originally belonged to a police sniper.
