Loading and feeding the 7 WSM.

I was talking to my smith today regarding which action to choose for my next project and we decided that an ordinary Remington SA is the best.
My plan is to buy a bolt from PTG then I can use the original bolt if I want another caliber.
BUT, here`s my question. What do you need to do to make the feeding and magazin work?? What must you change and what do you need to rework?
Or is it infact smarter to use a LA? Is the magazin on this one more suited for the fatter case?

I just built a 7WSM for myself last winter on a Rem 700SA.
To get it to feed properly and smoothly, I had to rework the bottom of the action on both sides of the magazine cutout, toward the front of the action.
I'm not sure what this area is called, but someone I was talking to about this called it the "lips"
It wasn't hard to do, it just took a bit of time being very careful not to take too much out.
I used a die grinder at first, then went to riffler files, then to polishing stones to get it good and smooth.
The shells feed very nicely after this mod.

Thanks Joe, I know which area you`re talking about. Is it possible for you to post a picture?
I posted a question a couple of days ago asking about other possible calibers to chamber for and a couple of guys suggested the 280 Remington AI.
I didn`t give it much thought at first but I must say that the caliber sounds more and more as a smart choise.
No messing around with the bolt, just buy a used 30-06 and they are not rare around here. And you can buy really good brass from Nosler.
If you look at some load data the two calibers is almost identical.

Finally, if you got, or know of someone who have, a reamer for sale I`m very interrested.

Sorry to sound negative here but I don't have the reamer, and I don't have a good enough camera (or camera skills) to get you a good pic of the lips.

The .280 AI might be a very good alternative

Something that I don't care for in a short mag hunting gun (repeater) is that the bullets must be seated too deep in the case in order to function out of the magazine.

This takes up powder capacity

and

I don't feel that the full accuracy potential can be reached because the bullets can't be seated in or near the lands without having a specially ground reamer with a short throat.

and

My rifle only holds two rounds in the magazine because the cartrige cases are so fat.

Please understand that I am not trying to be a downer on the WSM cases. I love my 7WSM and it sure puts the smack down on deer. Just wanted to let you know of a few negatives that I have found.

No you don`t sound negative, on the contrary, you have given me the final info I needed in order to make up my mind.
I`ve talked to Dave Kiff, PTG, about a reamer in 280 Rem Imp, this caliber seems to have it all. The power is on par with the WSM, you can buy good brass from Nosler and reloading dies are afordable and easy to get hold of. And finally you can take an ordinary Remington LA, blueprint the action and rebarrel it, done! No hassle with the bolt, feeding or magazin.
What made me consider the 7 WSM in the beginning was the shape of the case it looks almost like a big PPC and after talking to some people about it they all said that it`s a shooter. But I think that if you do what it takes to a rifle the 280 rem ai will work to.
I`ll take a last look in my books if there`s perhaps a caliber I`ve missed othervise I`ll go with the 280 AI.
