Load data for 4197?

I have an 8# jug of DATA 4197, lot # 13994. It states on the bottle that it is 1-3 grains slower than IMR 4198. Since I have not loaded either 4198 or 4197 in the 6 PPC before, I am seeking some advice from someone who may have used this DATA powder. I will be shooting both 68 FB and BT bullets. Does anyone have some pet loads that they would share? Thanks, James Mock

I have shot 4197 for better than 10 years. In a 30x44 HBR and in a PPC. Both the 144-44 lot and the 13994 lot ( there were only 3 lots). I jave found that it is only a tad faster than the 1999-384 N-133 in comparison. I describe it that way, because when I first started shooting the 4197 I was shooting 1995 and 1999 N-133 in my 30x44 and I only had to make a click one way or the other to switch to the 4197. And for those who want to climb on me on this one, I only have 16+ jugs of the 13994 in my powder locker. I have a little bit of working knowledge of the stuff. Was originally Scot Brigadeer powder. Even have a old 1# can in my collection of the original stuff

Thanks all. I guess I will start at about 26.5 gr and work up until I get a velocity over 3300 with a 68 gr. bullet. My barrel seem to like at least 3300 to group well. James mock

I broke out the old Oehler and tested some loads with this lot of 4197. I used a Bartlein barrel (13.75 twist/ 21.5 inches long). I started low with 26.5 gr and a Larry Moore 68gr FB and got 3080 fps. Next I bumped it up to 27.8 gr. and got 3218 fps. This seemed a lttle slow and there were no pressure signs so I went to 28.5 and got 3312, but the bolt lifted a little harder. Next I tried 28.3 gr. with Bart's 68 gr Ultra and got 3275 with no pressure signs and good accuracy. In this hot, humid Louisiana weather, I will stop at 28.3. James Mock

Skeet, 4197 is no longer being made. Scot made some along with 3032 and 4351...which had a burning rate similar to the number for Dupont's offering. James

Scott 4197

James I have shot over 8 lb, Scot 4197 in 6ppc w/good results. Always used 51.5 to 52 on Culver. On balance beam 28 to 28.6gr. Hope this will help. HFV
