ARA National - Gunsmiths

Here is a list of the top 6 Gunsmiths from this years ARA Nats sorted by the number of shooters. Remember that A lot of shooters share equipment so the number of guns actually smithed would be less. If you do a Search of the forum or this website you can find a Tel or email for all of them.

~ Gunsmith ~ # of Shooters
Richard Gorham ~ 16
Roger Brock ~ 15
Bill Calfee ~ 15
Bill Myers ~ 14
Gene Davis ~ 9
Brian Voelker ~ 5

That is a fair question. There are several excellent 22 gunsmiths around the country. I will offer one in your state who has helped me. Bill Myers has done some work for the best shooters in the game. You might call some of the ammo dealers who specialize in Match 22 ammo and get their suggestions.

I have just suggest one of our most famous in this post. There are about half a dozen who are as widely respected. There are a good many who can build you a great rifle who are not so widely known.

Hear is an article that discusses Bill Myers.

Smiths/Championships

I believe Myers fits there too.IR 50/50 in 2008 I believe

Smiths/Championships

The IR 50/50 Sporter Nationals was won this year with a Gordon Eck
smithed gun.
The IR 50/50 3 Gun Nationals 6 gun Agg was also won with Gordon Eck smithed guns.

Well, I was just looking at the list asked about. My guess is if you add up all the national championships, and there have been a lot of them, Calfee is going to win hands down. His guns have at least one ARA and one BR-50 (maybe more). Certainly if you add all the major tournaments, his name will stand out above all the rest.

How about this year Gorham rifles having 5 out of the top 6 in the agg/stat-line,or 3 out of the top 5 at the nationals.

I don't think anyone would dispute that Calfee is a Great Gunsmith, but there are at least 4 others that are building performance rifles at least at the same level as his.

It is then about putting these rifles in the right hands and finding the right ammo and tune to win.

Not too long ago Calfee and only a few others really understood and could lap a barrel into perfection. For the most part the good rimfire barrel makers are shipping barrels that are lapped to perfection....granted some of them have had alot of hand holding from some of the gunsmiths that knew how to evaluate and lap barrels, but are turning out great products because of it.

With all of the above said, for a new shooter who wants a rifle, try ordering one from Calfee and see how that works for you.

I guess you could wait for one of his spec rifles to come out and spend more than $6k for one which frankly I have no problem with him doing at all. They are worth whatever he can get someone to pay, thats business.

So for the majority of shooters you can take him off your list of building your new rifle. Don't waste time thinking you are not going to be competetive without a Calfee rifle, because there are other smiths mentioned above that will take your order, charge you a fair price and put a very competetive rifle in your hand.

My 2 1/2 cents.

I think that Charlie hit the nail on the head, who can you actually call and get it done. That's the key.

List of Gunsmiths

Sometimes we forget to say Thanks to those that do the most

Jesse Patrick
Belongs on the List of Top Gunsmiths
If it were not for Jesse
A lot of us would not be able to compete at all
He has helped a lot of Shooters, in the past 10 years
And some of them have excelled to the top of the
Rimfire competition

Thanks Again Jesse

Great wisdom from the Show-Me State. Thanks Charlie
Wish I had said that
Don

I suspect that many of us contact a gunsmith and tell him what we want, which is fine, but we don't stop there. We try to tell him how to build the rifle.

I remember as a young home builder in my middle 20s trying to explain how I wanted the walls on a house built to an experienced carpenter in his prime. He offered me some friendly advice that I have always remembered. "Tell me what you want me to do but n don't tell me how to do it."

This must grate someone who has been building rifles for many years.
