Leupold scope question

I found a scope for sale and wonder about using it on my Anschutz .22.
The scope is a VariX-III 6.5-20x40mm EFR Target Riflescope with a target dot reticle.

I know it's a good scope, but will the dot reticle be a problem?

Thanks,
Jim

The Dot

The dot is fine. Many (if not most) benchrest shooters use scopes with a target dot, usually 1/8" MOA. The ony problem you may have is not enough magnification. BR scopes tend to be 36X or higher. If you're not shooting one of the BR disciplines, it should be a great varmint scope. I am not familiar with that particular model. Does it have an adjustable ocular (AO) lens? Many scopes are set to eliminate parallax at 100 yds. The AO will let you adjust for parallax at distances less then 100 yds where you'll likely be shooting a .22 LR. Hope this helps.

Yes, it has an adjustable objective. The EFR designation is Extended Focus range. Leupold says this allows it to focus from 10 meters to infinity.
I won't be shooting pure benchrest. It will mostly be sillouette and informal target.

I told the seller I would take it. $400.00 for a Leupold Target scope sounds good to me.

I have two of them and they will do great in BR. Many use the Weaver T-36 or Leupold Competition 50 power which are also good and great. I have one of each. On a day with lots of mirage you will wish for the 20 power.

Alan I considered a Weaver T36 a guy local had for sale. If I was going to shoot nothing but BR I would have bought it. The problem is that I will be shooting other types of matches too. I really seriously doubt I could use a 36x scope offhand in sillouette.
I have a Simmons 6.5-20x40 that I put on a Colt flattop AR15. I planned on using it for varmints. I think the 20x should do what I want it to, especially with the optics on the Leupold.
I was more worried about the dot, but after finding out it is a 1/8" dot I don't think it will be a problem.

Weaver 6-24x 42mm 1/8" A.O.

These can be bought new for about $350. It will give you a bit more power and it is a good scope. I have two. I also have one of the Leupold 6-20X and it is a good scope too. If I remember right, the Leupold weighs a bit less than the Weaver if making weight is an issue. The Weaver can be had with Mil-Dots too and that might be useful in silhouette.

Sounds Good!

I think you've made a wise purchase. With the AO, the various distances required for shooting silhouette should not be a problem. It might be worthwhile to check the correct adjustments on the ocular for the silhouette ranges since the factory markings are in yards rather than meters. You can make temporary marks with a marker or #2 pencil at the 50m etc. ranges. When changing the scope elevation for the various ranges, you can then also quickly adjust for parallax. Have fun!

Back when I shot small bore silhouette over 20 years ago 36x was the standard.

my neighbor swears by those efr scopes ive got a couple but lean towards the 36 power.

i have one on an anschutz 1416, but without the dot. The scope is terrific, my only regret is not getting the dot.

The Leupold custom shop can put any kind of reticule you want in any of their scopes.
I have a 3X9X33 EFR Leupold that I had an 1/8" dot installed along with target knobs. This scope is dynamite on airgun silhouette along with .22 NRA and IHMSA smallbore silhouette.
