Hi,

There is heaps of talk about off eye watching of flags etc.

So i am asking if anyone else is in my boat, i mean i need to close my right eye to shoot as its the dominant eye.

If your like me can you tell me how you deal with it.

Rob

Rob,

just like you do; close your right eye(blink) and shoot.

It is a REAL handicap, but it could be worse. We could be blind in our right eye.

If possible, YOU should learn to shoot RIGHT HANDED!

I am semi blind in my left eye. I have a loss of vision down the center while still retaining some peripheral vision in that eye. The centerline of my 'both eyes open' vision is the right eye. This may be a small advantage when looking through a scope but never having had stereoscopic vision I can't say for sure. The 'coke bottle bottom' corrective lens I require would totally negate any possible advantage .

I should experiment with an eye patch which is what Rob should try. Keeping one eye closed contributes to fatigue in a long match and is distracting.

I asked most of the guys that shoot in our matches and none of them said they look at the flags with their off eye.

I am the other way around, left eye dominant, right handed, and have always shot left handed. I recently convinced a friend, that is the same way, to switch to left handed shooting, and after getting used to it, he agrees with me that it is better. It is my opinion that shooting with one's off eye, will always be, to one degree or another, a distraction, and that in a sport where we need the use of both eyes, an unnecessary disadvantage.

Practice

I am right handed and left eye dominant.

I shoot with both eyes open - one on target, one on flags. Like anything else it just takes practice. Actually, I think of it as an advantage.....your dominant eye is watching flags....once you get "on target", your flags are what you should be watching anyway.

Now as far a shooting a shotgun or handgun - I have to squint one eye to make it work.

When using scopes, unless the weak eye behind the scope is terrible, adjustment of the scope will overcome the dominate eye for target vision. Proper placement of the scope and focus will allow you to shift point of vision between flags and target - thru the scope for target around scope for flags. You may have to adjust eye releve and focus to achieve this result. I shoot left handed with right eye dominate. Recent infection in right eye resulting in me try to place right eye behind scope with good eye seeing flags, didnot work because vision is currently too bad in eye that had infection. I am just the opposite. I am right handed and left eye dominate. I shot long guns left handed and it works okay.

I'm in the same position as Scott - right handed and left eye dominant. As a photographer, I shoot with my left eye - usually...Because I frequently shoot sports, I learned to keep my second eye looking for that foul ball, basketball or linebacker that might be headed my way outside the view of the big lens. It takes some getting used to, but it works...I said usually above in that I will occasionally shift to shooting photos with my right eye when I need to have a better view from that side of the camera...like when the pitcher is to my right and a foul ball may be coming at me from the left! It has saved injury (or at least embarrassment) a few times!!!

However, it is fairly obvious from my shooting this past weekend that LOOKING at the flags doesn't necessarily translate into UNDERSTANDING the flags!!!

Ignore it...

I honestly think that most of us are "Other eye" dominant.

Learn to look thru the scope with one eye. Use the other eye for the flags. Do this a lot and you will get pretty good at it.

Can Be An Advantage

Rob;

I am right handed and left eye dominant. Over the years I trained myself to shoot with both eyes open during pistol competition. I have now converted to Benchrest and still shoot with both eyes open. It is a real advantage for watching flags. It takes some time and lots of practice but it is a real advantage.

Thanks for the reply guys.

I can shoot ok right handed, but left is def better.

I learnt to bow shoot with a patch, but will get out the old 22 and try a few boxes with both eyes open.

Thanks again
