Lawton 7500 trigger problems and bolt problems (again)

Hello again guys,

As some of you know I've had nothing but problems with my Lawton 7500 in .22BR. Earlier it was the extractor retainer spring and now it's the Shilen Competition trigger.

The other day the sear was out of adjustment causing the gun to fire when you bump the bolt. A simple sear adjustment, or so I thought. After adjusting the sear I cannot get the gun to cock at all and now the bolt is extremely hard to lift.

I've sent an email to the gunsmith who made it (I bought it from a different guy) so hopefully I'll be able to hear back soon.

Any suggestions in the mean time??

Trigger hangar issues seem to be the norm. I know of several that needed the trigger pin holes repositioned in order for the trigger to function.

Something to check before jumping through too many hoops..... -Al

Is that what could be causing the difficulty in opening the bolt?
 
Possibly, but hard to say w/o having it in hand.

My bet is the relationship between the cocking cam (on the f.p. assy.) and the top sear on the trigger (that the cocking cam bears against) is out of whack. As well as fore/aft issues, the trigger might also be effectively too high or too low due to hole position in the hangar. You could try spacing the hangar down a skosh and see how it acts. Also, check to make sure the trigger hanger is fully seated against the action when the screws are tightened and that the trigger side plates aren't 'bottoming out' on the action before the hangar is tight.

Many of these issues can make it appear to be a problem with the trigger itself, when in fact it's simply a matter of the triggers position, relative to the cocking cam.

Not saying it couldn't be the trigger, as I had a similar issue a couple of years ago with another brand of BR trigger. Turned out the side plates were simply too high. Once I trimmed them down, all the issues went away. Haven't seen that with a Shilen, though...but something to check.

Let us know what you find, okay? There's some guys here that are really, really good with 'timing' issues such as this...hopefully some others will add ideas. -Al
