Lathe

Some love it, some dont. I have the G4003G and like it very much. I've built several rifles for myself with it and all have shot extremely well.

For what you are spending and doing they are ok. If I had the room and the dollars I would have upgraded to at least a larger Tiwanese machine. The same folks that build these machines send us poisoned food and toys. We buy these machines because of price and Grizzlys customer service, 2nd to none.

I have just started making my own barrels as a hobby and have much to learn. But for what is worth, I picked up a 4003G and it seems like a tight machine that puts out a good barrel. I had motor problems twice within about 6 months with very low hours on the machine. The first time they fixed it, the second they provided me with a new motor. I am very skeptical of Grizzly's motors but so far they have stood behind their product and have great customer service

I recently found an 11x36 Rockwell lathe in excellent condition. It came with a taper attachment, steady rest, collet closer, QC tool post and holders, 3- and 4-jaw chucks, plus a Themac precision tool post grinder! Cost was $1500.

My advise to anyone looking for a lathe is to watch the auction sites and craigslist. You will be surprised what you'll find if you have the patience.

Used lathes - more for your money.

With so much manufacturing going overseas the price of quality used US made lathes is pretty reasonable. I recently bought an 18x56 Lodge and Shipley (a 4 ton beast) for $3600 including 1000 pounds of chucks and tooling.

I still had to give money to Asia, $2000 for a 20 HP 240 single phase --> 240V@60A 3ph VFD to power it. I build astronomical research instruments in my shop. Gunsmithing is just a hobby.
