I worked for four years in Russia in the oil service business. My dad was a cold war warrior (Air force officer from '54 to '76 and three tours in VN) it was a unique experience to live along side people that a generation before was the hated enemy.
I fell in love with the Russian people and how well I was received and treated. I can't count the times that I had travel problems due to language and all I had to do was ask out loud if anyone spoke English... next thing I knew several people would be there to help, often going out of their way to get me to where I needed. Try that in NY, LA or even Dallas!
99% of the people there are just like us, they want the same things we do, a warm place to sleep, a good job and a safe place to raise their kids for a better live then their own. The other 1% are politicians I think.
I have so many good friends there that I feel bad about how they are coping with the financial problems going on over there, none of it is of their making, they have a rough road ahead of them just like many of us have gone through and wouldn't wish on anyone.
Also they do enjoy life, never miss an opportunity to share a meal with friends and celebrate life events to the fullest. If you ever get a chance to visit don't pass it up but be warned. "DO NOT" try to keep up with the toast! They will tag team you with vodka!
