Yesterday, Saturday November 5th, we shot the last benchrest match ever at the TVA Gallatin Steam Plant range. It was our best turnout of the season with 37 rifles contesting. We had one shooter from Indiana, one from Alabama, one from Maryville and quite a few from Kentucky. I want to particularly recognize a young man from Murfreesboro, Mark Latimer. Mark posted a thread on Benchrest Central last week asking for information about benchrest matches near him. I saw it and sent him an email informing him of our match an issuing an invitation to join us. Mark is 17 years old and inherited the rifles of his grandfather, Bob Latimer. His parents brought him to the match and encouraged him all day. He shot the 100 yard match with one of his grandfather's rifles, a Hart action in a Remington 40X style stock chambered in 22 PPC. It had a 24x Tasco scope. For his 1st competition, Mark shot that match very well with a score of 245. When he told me what he was bringing, I was concerned that his scope would not give him what he needed for the 200 yd competition, so I brought a Stiller Cobra 220 Beggs with a NF Competition 15x55. I offered it to Mark and he accepted. Mark finished 2nd in Custom class with a 245, the same score that he shot at 100 yds. Impressive, don't you think? I hope Mark will be able to join us next year wherever we find ourselves.
We awarded the Gallatin Gun Club Score Shooter of the Year Award to Jr Rigsby. It came down to the last match and both Joey Gregory and Jr had a chance to win. Jr pulled it out with an impressive 1st place in Custom Class.
Ron Jackson spent the day with our surveyor mapping the new property for a topo map. The cleared part is complete, but the part in the trees will take some time. As soon as this is complete it will go to our architect for an initial site plan and we will be able to begin laying out our plans for the new range. It's too soon to say for certain, but we hope to be able to be shooting on the new range maybe by the middle of next season. I'll keep everybody informed as we move forward.
I want to express my heartfelt thanks for the support we've had over the years. The Gallatin Gun Club has the highest participation in UBR and it's because you guys and girls are the best. I expect this to continue with a new name and a new range. I will be mailing the awards out to those I don't regularly see and should have them by around the first of December. I also want to remind you of the matches held in Hoover Alabama at the Brock's Gap Training Center on the the 3rd Saturday of every month. Unless something changes there are also score matches at River Bend Gun Club in Dawsonville GA on alternating months.
We expect to hold the next match in our area in March of 2017, either at Strategic Edge or Two Brothers, depending on how the schedule works out. I will also attach the scores from yesterday again. The Grand Agg winners were:
Factory - Russell Scales
Modified Rick Fox
Custom Jr Rigsby
Unlimited Wayne McNeely
