Lack of F class in California

Why is it so hard to find F class events in California?? I must have called every range and rifle club in the southern half of the state ( I live in riverside County). They either said just plain no, or couldn't get enough interested shooters to make it worth their time and effort. Most just said no.

you may try to locate Bolo, his handle here, he is from Southern Ca and shoots F class, he may be able to help. Ron Tilley

Cuyama and Coalinga

Palma and 1000 yard matches are held every 3rd Sunday of the month in Cuyama. Range is located near the intersection of Hwy 166 and Hwy 133 just outside of Maricopa.

800, 900, and 1000 yard matches are held in Coalinga 4 times per year and are 2 day matches.

600 yard Matches are held at Burbank Rifle Club near Castaic.

300, 600, and 800 yard matches are held monthly in Fresno at Fresno Rifle and Pistol Club.

Also matches near Temcula and at Camp Pendleton.

Email me for more details if you are interested.

One warning. If Ted brings Brenda to one of these matches, second is the best you will be able to accomplish.

This is why - and the phenomenon is not unique to Washington State either....
From http://www.wsrpa.net/cgi-bin/index.pl?id=2979&isa=Newsitem&op=show
Info for those looking for F-Class matches in Washington...

From time to time, we get contacted by people looking for F-Class matches here in Washington state. Usually the comment is something along the lines of 'there are NO F-Class matches listed in Washington'. Here's a little hint for you...

There are dozens of F-Class matches every year! Probably more than you can find time and money to go to! Some weekends it comes down to where *you* want to go, as there can be multiple matches on a given weekend.

Where are all these matches, that people seem to have trouble finding them?

They are right there in the High Power Rifle schedule.

Remember, F-Class is a sub-class of NRA High Power. (Emphasis mine) Almost any match explicitly marked 'Prone' or 'Palma' in the schedule is open to F-Class as well. Right now, there are plenty of F-Class shooters, but they tend to be kind of scattered out and in order to have a decent sized match... it ends up being a combination of conventional Prone shooters and F-Class shooters.

Another thing to keep in mind is that many clubs/ranges have a general rule of having to have at least 5 competitors in a class for $$$ awards. Less than 5 F-Classers... probably not going to have awards in F-Class. 4 Open class shooters and 3 TR shooters... probably just going to have one big 'F-Class', rather than breaking it down further. That's just the way it works!

Hope this helps explain things!
Most of the ranges are open to F-Class shooters firing in their events. They are not open to holding F-Class only events, because there normally aren't enough shooters present to hold such an event.

Ted,

You missed four ranges:
  • Seeley, CA - holds matches out to 800 (900?) yards;
  • Yuma, AZ - holds Palma matches;
  • Phoenix, AZ. Three ranges, the longest of which regularly holds Palma and 1000 yard matches.
  • 29 Palms. The USMC base holds a 1000 yard regional there every year.

All,
You all missed the 1000yd Nationals 23 - 25 October at the Sloughhouse Range hosted by the Folsom Rifle Club.

Cheers

Larry,

While I bet he'd have a good time @ the NBRSA 1k Nationals (heck, I'd like to go myself), he's having trouble finding *F-Class* matches...

You may want to check with this outfit:

4th Sunday 'Long Range' 10-25 next month includes F-Class!

Asa,

Yuma and Phoenix are not exactly southern CA. But the other two were good additions to the list.

Larry,

Sacramento definately is not southern CA. I live in Bakersfield and it is a 6 hour drive from my house; however, if one makes the drive, the best place to shoot in CA....maybe even the country. And yes, Brenda and I are shooting the 1K Nationals. Our first benchrest match.

John,

I showed Brenda your post.....she was so humble. Are you planning on shooting March Madness again this year? We sure look forward to seeing you. How is Tramp?

My Bad,
The mind goes blank when the word " SOUTHERN" appears.

Cheers

Ted,

Yuma is in AZ due to the Gila river. In the western part of town throw a rock, and you may hit California.

Phoenix is close enough to California to drive to shoot long weekend matches.

That's Seeley.

The mailing address is Imperial the range is north of Seeley and west of Imperial. Format is 300, 600 & 800, 20 rounds each. Palma, F/O & F/TR or your favorite hunting rifle, all are welcome. Bring your sunscreen. :D

found a place

believe it or not I have found a match. it isn't an F-class match per say. its a midrange prone match that welcomes F-class shooters. My first match is Nov 14 and 15.

Pendleton once a month for a 3x600 and the Desert sportsaman club in Palmdale for a 1000 yard match is where I go. The Pala has a long range match also.
