Kodiak Extractor Problem

Steelhead1

G Vanlier
I am having a problem with an extractor on my Kodiak Hunter Gun, A while back I was only neck sizing my brass and at a match the bolt became so hard to open I actually peeled the extractor back and I ordered a couple of new ones. The problem is I installed the new extractor spring and tit that holds it in place but the extractor won't extract the case, In looking at the bolt I can't see or feel any burrs but it seems to stick and it looks like the bottom of the extractor to catch the rim when closing the bolt is too thick? Should I stone the bottom of the extractor, to get additional clearance or am I missing something , does the extractor have to be fitted to the bolt or is it just a swap it out? I also tried the other new extractor and it will extract a sized case but when I went to the range yesterday it would not extract the fired case. It also seems to stick in the outermost position when I operate it manually? Totally baffled at this point!

Dear SH, I have had the same problem on a new Panda action. A little material removed from the bottom of the extractor fixed it. Be sure to just remove material from the bottom edge of the extractor that grips the case rim. Most often the extractor is a drop in fit but some need a small amount of material removed. It is a trial and error process. File and try it. If it doesn't work file a little more. Remove only a little bit at a time and sneak up on it. Good luck. Tim

huhh, I didn't know The Good Dr could speak prose, but I agree with him.

As a long-time-ago schooled gunsmith we learned that most parts come very slightly oversized so that you could quickly and easily fit them to different guns. Now with the advent of CNC and various computer controlled tooling centers we've come to expect drop-in fits :) but I for one am surprised every time this happens.

Hey Al'
your right I do think we do expect CNC parts to be just a switch out item. I built this gun 5 years ago and have only shot 3 matches with it, but the local shooting club is getting closer to starting up a hunter shoot and I want to get it back in action! Thanks for your help also,it is very much appreciated.

Homedale Rod & Gun Club, Homedale, Idaho,They just authorized the money to construct the concrete benches and a couple of our guys shoot up in montana and brought back a pattern and made a steel form and I am hoping that by October they should be done. Maybe by next spring I will be able to get all the details in place with the NBRSA and we can start some shoots! They are also going to start shooting IR-50/50 rimfire matches. I know for sure there are at least a dozen Hunter rigs in the Boise area and if you toss in another 8-10 guys that shoot Vale Or. Group shooters I think we could muster up 15-20 shooters. VFS is also a possibility! We already have a nice range but they have benches with3/4' Plywood tops and they are terrible to shoot off of. Nice reloading area and enough room to park RV's if we had a 2 day shoot.
