King of 2 Miles 2016 Report AAR
The King of 2 Miles 2016 is over and has proven that we are advancing steadily towards our goal of consistently hitting a target 2 miles away, in NON-selected conditions, using a rifle on a bipod. Last year, we had a single hit on the 3x4’ 2318 yard target and this year we had 5 hits on a 3x2’ target at 2477 yards and two of those hits were on the first shot! This is as close to real world 2 miles shooting as it gets and it is evolving rapidly.

We started the course of fire with 5 shots at a 3x3’ electronic target at 1454 yards . Anyone scoring hits moved on to take 3 shots at the 3x2’ 1556 yard steel target, then the 3x3’ 1724 yard electronic target and finally the 3x2’ 2011 yard steel target. Scoring worked as a multiplier of the range times shot order so a first shot hit got you three to five times the range and a last shot hit only got you the yardage in points.

We didn’t allow any practice on the range prior to the match and shooters were only allowed 9 minutes to complete their shooting and to compound things, the positions of the targets required shooters to reposition significantly during the course of fire. To put into perspective how unforgiving this kind of shooting is, a quarter of shooters were eliminated on the first target and fully half by the second target. The top ten shooters from the qualifying days moved on to shoot in the finals.

Since we like to reward first shot hits as much as we like to punish walking it in, shooters had ten minutes to take fifteen shots starting at 2011 yards. If they hit a target in the first 5 shots, they had to move on to the next target and got points as a multiplier of shot order. If they hit a target beyond the first 5 shots on it, they were allowed to move on but got no points. The second target was a 3x2’ plate hanging on a cliff face at the top of a mountain at 2477 yards followed by a 3x2’ plate at 3375 yards.

The “KO2M 2016” album shows impressive views of how far a 2477 yards shot actually is. Most consider these shots to be impossible and yet, we are capable of engaging small 24”x36” targets at this range. When you consider that the bullet is nearly 4 seconds in flight, that’s truly amazing shooting.

The maximum possible score was about 120k and Mitchell Fitzpatrick and his spotter Paul Phillips won the KING trophy with a score of 65k. Mitchell used his impressive .375 Lethal Precision Arms LLC rifle shooting prototype solid 400gr Berger bullets. Mitchell built this rifle................
