"kids round"

I am in the process or getting a couple of new bbls for my LG. I currently shoot a 300 WBY, and will continue to do so, BUT.......My kids are wanting to start shooting (maybe), and aren't that big (yet). Must be a hidden recessive gene, or passed on by thier mother!!:D I have a dasher, but want another gun for them. I could just swap tubes on my LG.

Question.............Without having to spend another $500.00+ on a new bolt from BAT, what would a good, lower recoil round be with a magnum bolt face. The only thing I can think of is a 6.5mm Rem MAG. I guess I am not afraid of a wildcat, but by the time I spend a pile of cash on custom dies and stuff, I may as well just buy the new .308 bolt.

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tod.

How old?

300WSM seems to be ok. 7WSM too, but barrel life aint the best with one of those. A real good brake and 17.00# would be the ticket ;)

If you can buy a complete bolt for a BAT for $500 get it.The last time I called they were running $770 and a long wait.
For kids go 6BR or Dasher as recoil is almost non-existent.

Tod, research the 6.5 wssm, quite a few of them around, I have a couple variants, 6.5fan shoots one very successfully, Boyd Heaton, there are more, just not off the top of my head right now, its based off the .243wssm or the .25wssm hope it helps, Ron Tilley

Redding dies available for this now, on the seater, I think you have to open up the stem to accomadate the seater plug. the bushing die will work universally by changing out the bushings. body die included in set.

You could be right.....the last time I checked was over a year ago....and I was thinking of going the OTHER WAY....416/378 bolt.... I am over it now, thank GOD.

I do have a Dasher built on a Rem 700.....So I have all of the custom dies for that. No brakes.....no recoil....no heat.....Pretty cool!!:D

I just need another one!!

Tilley....Is the WSSM bolt face the same as my current mag bolt face. I have to admit....I don't know much about the WSSM case. From what I have read here (can't remember the author) the short fat case is a good thing.....but a little to much of a good thing in the WSSM case. I would have to admit that the WSSM case in a 6.5 seems like a HELL of an idea for my needs!!

6.5fan Martin????? promotes that case alot and has had great success, Boyd Heaton, and a number of others, a great round, VERY THICK necks, you need to turn alot and anneal if possible, I think that is the big secret to help with that case. let me know if you want more information.

Ron,

I have been doing my reserch both here and on the rest of the web. It looks like there are 2 different 6.5 wssm.....one based off of the 243 wssm, and the other based off of the 25 wssm. That makes no sence to me. I understand that it is a wildcat, and that there could be many different variants of the same thing. But, why would it be different just because of the brass? I would think starting with the 25 wssm would make more sence.

Same with the dies.....Could you start off with 25 wssm dies and use the proper bushings? I see no sorce for 6.5 wssm dies as of yet. I don't expect I will, either.

I am guessing that since the 243 came out way before the 25, I am reading older posts, and using the 243 was THE only choice. I am very interested in this project, but want to do it the best and simplest way possable.

Tod, I am pretty sure that Redding lists custom dies for the 6.5wssm, I use the .25wssm bushing die and a body die of the same, and have a seater that I bought off the net that was cut in a Newlon blank, you can have a Redding seater opened up and the seater plug changed alot cheaper. I think you are right about the difference in the .243 and the .25, just the time difference between introducing the new rounds. Both of my reamers are based off the .25, I can tell you the most important thing about this round is the brass, buy lots of it and sort. Turning is very important, they have a very thick neck. I started annealing as well after Martin???? I can not remember his last name suggested it to me, he goes by 6.5fan.
I shoot 130 grain bullets and 140 grain bullets, mine are 8 twist barrels finished at 29and 30"

Ron,

Since this will require neck turning....what is the neck diameter of finished rounds using your reamer? How about bbl life?

6.5/25wssm

my reamer has a .300 neck loaded rounds are .297-.298.barrel life is good ,probly better than 6.5/284.my first barrel I had rechambered at 850 rounds then shot it another 600.the last group fired was 6.8" for 10 shots at 1k.I already had a new barrel so I put it on.good luck.martin dailey:D

Tod, my reamer is a .301 nk, I can send you my reamer sheet (I think). If you want it let me know, I see 6.5 fan has replied, he is probably the most experienced person I can think of in relation to this case. Ron Tilley

Anyone out there willing to rent out your 6.5 WSSM reamer should I decide to move forward with this project. I was just thinking that I could use it myself in some 300-600 informal f class matches held up my way instaed of the 300 wby. It is good way to shoot and not have to drive 1000 miles round trip for a 1 K match. I would probably have Spencer do it when he does my other 30 cal bbls, since he will already have the gun.

If I knew enough about the round, and KNEW I was going to keep shooting it in the future I would have a reamer made up.

Let me know.

Thanks,
Tod
