Junior shooter award

At a match at Fairfax a couple months back, I was talking to Wayne & Lynn Shaw and they mentioned that they had started a fund for an award for the top junior shooter at this years IBS Score Nationals at Chippewa. I was interested and said I would donate to the cause as I enjoy seeing young shooters on the line with the rest of us. I for one would like to see a bunch of juniors at the Nationals as well as all the matches, so I'm proposing that we bolster this fund to include a top 3 at the Nationals. With the money that we spend on our hobby, I don't think its asking too much to give a little for the next generation of shooters. While I compete for the satisfaction of beating up on Adrian(which sadly hasn't happened lately), kids may need a little more incentive. We have one regular junior shooter at FFX, Nick Gardener, who is fast becoming a very good shooter. We get other juniors as well, but its more sporadic. I would like to see that change so I'm gonna propose that we start a junior shooter fund at FFX to hopefully bring more kids to the matches. I'd like to see the winner take home $30 and second place get $20. Now if 25 shooters donated just $2 each, or less than one relay worth of BIBS;), we would have this 50 bucks. Since our next match at FFX is in less than 2 weeks, I have decided that I will donate up to the whole $50 for first and second place, but I sure would like some help. As to the donations for the Nationals, I don't know how Wayne and Lynn are set up for taking donations, but I will help out anyway I can. Please email me if you would like to chip in. hal991@hotmail.com

I like the idea of the Junior recognition and I will pitch in with Hal (even though he talks a lot of smack :D).

Is there an official age to qualify as a Junior?

Hey, Hal, that's a pretty nifty idea for Fairfax! A few of the FFX youth shooters who used to shoot there (Jon Lester and Junior Stanley) have probably grown out of the youth category, but Nick still has a few years left. So maybe a cash-pot could lure a few more young-ins to Fairfax to give The Nickster some competition. (Hmmm... although after his last showing with 18 Xs, he seems to hold his own amidst the elder set, huh? )

This youth participation idea all started a few years back when both Bill Truit and Wayne realized that a few of the young shooters had no gun to shoot. They decided to offer a way to provide a gun for those who were interested. Others chimed in to offer guns, services, or just general assistance. Now we're taking this a step further with an Award -- hoping to get more from the Youth group to participate in IBS matches.

When I earned $75 scoring the 200-300 Nationals at Thurmont last fall, I decided to donate that little windfall to next year's Nationals. I don't believe that scoring should be a profit for someone in a non-profit organization (and if any other scorers feel that way, donate the money back into IBS for a cash award!). I've asked that this donation be used to start a Youth Award. Wayne's kicking in another $25, so we've got $100 to put in for the Youth Award and Borden agreed to it. If anyone wants to pitch in, send me or Wayne a PM and we will work out a receipt for an earmarked donation that will go into the Youth Award for the Nationals in Ohio. Just think -- $2 contributed by a number of shooters who want to advance the winnings for the Youth group would make a nice winning for a young shooter!!

(Adrian, dude...you are probably not going to qualify as a Junior. But maybe the dogs might....):D

Hal,

I'm on board as well. As a father of two that have come out shooting with me, I know they appreciate the recognition and encouragement they receive.

I remember a couple of years ago someone started an award for a Junior shooter for their first 250. I tried to find out about it when Shane got his first 250 last year, but didn't get very far.

One problem that I see with this year's Nationals is that they're scheduled during the school year. Last year we made the trip up to NY during the summer where Shane swept the Junior category (sorry - had to brag :D). We were really looking forward to going again this year as he was hoping to defend his title. With about a 6 hour drive, I haven't given up on the idea as yet, but he's going to have to miss some school if we are able to attend.

I don't expect the planners to make decisions based on a few Junior shooters, but I'm sure there are others who would find it easier to make the bigger matches during the summer. Last year our family made a vacation out of the trip to NY and spent a few days there before the match and a few days visiting places on our way home. Even my wife, who we haven't talked into shooting yet, enjoyed the trip.

In any case, count me in on the Fairfax award...and the National award too!

Come on now... I'm only the grandfather of two.

Have you gotten them rifles yet or are you going to let them use the silver gun?

Never mind...just reach in the safe and hand them a Savage...

Adrian, I don't think there is anything official, I'd say under 18 would qualify, but that would be up to everyone.

I think the cut-off was always 16 (incl), but I could be wrong.

Wayne, Lynn,

I'm interested in helping w/the Nationals thing, please fill me in via e-mail.

Adrian,
A:c.5 in the rule book says "IBS Junior members (17 & under) registration fees shall be set at 1/2 the fees for adults". This has traditionally been used for all Junior programs. Trying to give young folks every chance we (for group shooting) don't count junior shooters time as rookie years - they can compete 2 full years as rookies after they turn 18. I'm not certain if the score commitee does the same.
Question, if you know - IBS awards a championship keeper for juniors in the group (HV Grand) and score (VFS 1/200) at the nationals. Same plaque and patch as the other champions. What have you in mind? I ask because this is good stuff encouraging juniors. Nothing compares to the look of accomplishment when they best us!
Little do they know how much we enjoy seeing them enjoy the sport.

Slightly off topic, but the IBS 1,000 yard faction has a scholarship program for juniors shooters. The scholarship is given to any shooter who attends school beyond high school -- college or trade school. I believe we are now up to two $500 per year (for four years) scholorships.

For a second bit, Brandon McNeil won the IBS 1,000 yard National Championships as a junior, I believe in 1999. Anyway, it was the second Nationals at Rob Ritchie's place in Virginia. Far as I know, he's the only junior shooter ever to win a national match.

Gary,

Here's what the plaques look like (assuming this works!)

A quick look at his face will tell you how rewarding it is!

A challange

To all of you hard hearts - to look at that photo and not smile yourself. The picture tells the story of why these young folks deserve all the help and encouragement we can give them. FWIW - Having the honor of congratulating Him that day I can say this is a fine young man. Tony - ya done good.
