Joel,

Once I got back to work here, I thought about our conversation up at the match. Here's an alternative to a DRO for you that will be an off the shelf solution.

Using one fo these and the B&L / Mitutoyo linear encoders you already have, you can replace the B&L counter unit you have now for roughly $200 new or less. We've gotten these on Ebay for use here at work before and we have several on machines using encoder wheels for product measurement. Most (if not all) have programmable input prescalers so you can take the number of counts per inch from your encoder and tell it to display correctly. IE: X number of counts = .001", etc.

Each of these would cover one axis and will use the existing encoders. They are equipped with a 5V output for the encoder and directly read the outputs from them (wired correctly as I drew up in the clubhouse). There's a reset button just like we've got on our B&L's now.

I'll still build a dual axis version cause it's fun, and cause we have other uses for these things in a generic controller format. But, this will get your mill going in short order.

If you do find any on Ebay, be certain to get add/subtract versions. The ones that won't go negative error out when you move the wrong direction and are worthless for DRO use.

I was glad you guys all came up to the match. Nice shooting too.

Thanks Phil. A lot cheaper than a current model B&L 2 axis DRO.
