JJ Slide Revised Pappas

This is not an advertisement. James Pappas was nice enough to make and send me a JJ Slide that does not require a tuner. I've been a little out of sorts the last few days (I think I had the pig flu), and only got to try it today. One word I can think of is Wow

I configured the slide several ways and shot specific lot ammo and mixed ammo. Bear in mind that I shot no ammo that I have considered as that one guy says "killer" ( I would say the name but may get deleted).

I will have pictures of the groups but as of now I need batteries and don't feel like hitting 64 even for a few miles. But I will get them out.

This is a weird looking creature because it is long, but to make a long story short, I tried moving the weight to several places and finally settled on just allowing venting in the upper small holes. The groups are surprisingly better and one ten shot group of mixed ammo looks not much bigger than a bullet hole. Every group I shot at the setting I decided on would all easily fall within the 100 ring of an ARA target with room to spare. Conditions were cool (about 68) with a slight right to left wind.

I'm interested how this thing will do in a good strong wind but I think it's a winner.

More to come.

It attaches to the barrel with a clamp similar to any rimfire tuner. At the end of that clamp are the threads. Simply screw it on. But you don't already have eight ounces on there.

I'll get batteries tomorrow and take pics of the tuner and the results.

Madrox,
When you have a photo could you send me one peter@oz-rba.com I’ve got a barrel that seems to want a lighter tuner and I get good results with the noodles.

For those of us who live outside the US and are well out of the loop on new developments, we do appreciate people like you posting info on new gear like this.

Peter

Hi Mr Nobody,

These are made down here by Jason Lowey, they are a good product & I actually sell them in Sydney for $150 AUS, it would still be good to see the photo of this new JJ Slide & also to see if they help as much as the original version that goes on the tuner.

Bill,

And you go on about me and my toys your getting just as bad. by the my SEB is working real well and has a new polished steel counter weight on it looks the bees nees and shooting nothing less than 249 with my other toys.

So AndyD, nice toys, but one question: how do you see your windflags with that opaque block over your left eye?

Dave

Andy,

You’re a better man than me, there is no way I could shoot in the wind using only one eye.

Peter

Hya Guys,

As Peter know I am a disabled shooter and part of my disability is that I have neurological problems and part of that effects my right eye as I can’t close it properly or see through the scope with both eyes open, it’s just impossible for me.
I did start out with a black eye patch but looked more like something out of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ so was looking at what prone shooters have and went from there.

How I see the flags is by bobbing my head up and down, but I also use the ‘finger pinch technique’ and what I can do when I feel confident is place the hair on the target and then spend time looking at the flags and when happy I pull the trigger. You will see I don’t have my cheek on the stock and that is because I use John Morrison offset mounts and from my wheelchair position it really help me, so the only part of my body that touches the rifle is my thumb on the rear of the trigger guard and my finger on the trigger.

I only just got the SEB rest a couple of weeks ago and have been knocking out 249 every time but still getting use to the rest, as you can see I have a nice counter weight on the front of the rest and I have manage to set it up on the tension the it runs smooth but also sits there were I put it to the point that I can take my hand of the coaxial handle, it’s a great piece of kit and love it.

very nice rest andy !!how about some more info on the rest !!!
Thanks and good luck shooting !!! Tracy

Beau,
I agree about Andy looking like Matt. What's that segment on the Today Show: Where in the World is Matt Lauer? Well, I think you found him!

Andy,
I admire you even more now as I can't imagine trying to use wind flags when having to shoot with only one eye as it would definitely be a daunting task. But, even with both eyes working, I too have often times used the method you speak of by getting everything set to where I want it, then lifted my head away from the gun and scope to better see the flags while waiting for just that right moment to squeeze the shot off. I often times would find myself forgetting to focus on the further flags, especially when time was starting to get tight, and would unconsciously start focusing on only the closer ones. But, by doing as you say definitely does help you to see the entire field of flags before you.
Again, nice rig! Oh, and everyone report I have read from the owners of SEB rest have always said the same thing as you, and have always raved about how once they're set to where you want them, you don't have to worry about them creeping off that setting, whether you're tending to the joy stick or not. Good choice!

By the way, is that one of the new Nikko Sterling Diamond Sportsman Series 10-50X scopes? And, if so, which reticle did you go with, and how do you like it? Just a guess, but with that green target turret sticking up there I wanted to ask as I've been seriously considering buying one to put onto my Theoben MFR FAC Bench Air Gun.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the kind words, not sure who Matt is and getting a bit worried!

Yes it is the new Nikko Stirling and a lovley scope it is, i went with the NATO reticle as i was not sure by the pictures i seen on their webiste. I have just doen a review on the scope and it should be in November Issue of Target Shooter, so watch this space for more details.

Yes the SEB is a great peice of kit and just getting used to it and seems to be the choice of a lot of shooters, but the 10 1/2lb guys have found it difficult to use so they have devised the counter weight to help, i was lucky that i had some make a real nice stainless steel on that keeps in line with the polished metal.

cheers, AndyD

Andy,

From everything I could see, plus everything I have read about the scope, that would be my reticle of choice as well. But, it's always good to hear from someone who has actually used one for benchrest to get a first-hand opinion.

By the way, and here's a small world story for you. I'm a true Yankee as my family has been in the U.S. since before the time of the Mayflower's crossing. But, around 37 years ago my brother decided to pack it all in and move he and his wife (who was from Maine) over to the U.K. because of his intense love for and profound involvement with formula car racing. He was a top driver, so all was well and good right up until the time his finances and sponsorships began to dry up, and his family began to grow. But, no matter, for whatever the reason he decided to stay over there and now lives almost directly across the Island from you in Faversham, which is around a third of the way between Canterbury and Maidstone.

Anyway, that's all I've got for now. Glad we could swap a few ideas.

Dave
