Can someone describe what James Pappas wind flags look like and how they show vertical air movement please? Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Allan

Allan,
You banana benders are slow I’ve had one for a couple of years.
Does it work? Depends on the range but if I was going back to Warwick for a match I’d pack one, might be handy on that right hand end.

i see my question has spurred others along as well. see us new gus can make people think after all!!!!

pictures and explanations please!!!!! there are others who want to know, but were afraid to ask. i'm not. if you don't ask you may never find out you know!!!!

How does it work

Peter,
Thank you for your input but what does it look like and how does it work. In other words what principle does it work on? How about putting a picture of your one on the Board for interested people.

Don't do anything you can't spell.

I don't have pictures avaliable but it is very similar to a wind flag but has both vertical and horizontal fins to not only catch the azimuth changes but also any vertical and horizontal movement so it also swivels up and down. It has a threaded weight on the front to balance it. Instead of tails it has many short maybe a 3 or 4 inches of inches almost confetti looking stringers haning on one of the horizontal planes.

It is made on something similar to a carbon arrow about 2 foot long with the small adjustable weight on the front with the fins only being maybe in the last 4 to 6 inches or so. Sitting similar to the way a wind flag would.

It just gives you another piece of information to judge the wind. I have found it helpful on many occasions.....sometimes not so much.

Hope this helps....hopefully someone will past a picture.

Charlie, I shot to the left of you at Mill Creek ARA State Championship about two years ago. I think I was on one and you were on two. I didn't do very well. Anyhow I noticed there were a few folks using the Pappas wind flag. I don't know if you remember mine, I made them back in 2001 or 2002. Some regular dual vane flags and some dual dimension. I made about 4 different ones before I made the final ones. I finally put my streamers on a separate rod as I found they stabilize the flags when you don't want it stabilized. I was using longer streamers and that will cause more stabilizing. But you might try setting up two of those, one with those short streamers and one without and see if it makes a difference in sensitivity to up/down wind. Rich

BR50--query on James Pappas windflags

The windflags were called shear indicators. I designed these in particular for use in light wind conditions to indicate the up and down component of the air (shear) movement on those days when the bullet moves around for reasons not indicated with the regular, lateral movement, flags. They are used as an adjunct, not instead of, regular flags. The tail of the flag has many vertical and horizontal planes and pivots both up/down and sideways. The feather-like streamers on the back of the tail are indicators to tell you in very light wind conditions whether the shear indicator is indeed in the up/down position because of a light shear or stopped there because of no air movement. The flag can be balanced perfectly(inside your home, preferably) by the adjustment on the tip and will indicate the slightest up/down air movement on the range. James built and sold these about two years ago, but ceased production because they were labor intensive and he was very busy with a special woodworking project and had a lot of rest orders. I have pictures but I need to learn how to put them on the forum. Send me your email address---I know how to email pictures---and I will send you some.

Thanks for the information

Thank you Charlie, Rich and Joe for the informaion. Joe I have sent you an email with my email address, once again thanks for the help.

Alan,
I turned the computer on this morning and see your getting the info you asked for. But what they didn’t say is because the flag tilts if you place it in line with your other flags it needs to a foot or more lower than the other flags to allow for the tilt, but I kept losing sight of it amongst my other flags and probes. I tried putting it above the line of the target and at times it will snap hard up or down and the Wicks tripod will really be shaking, yet the other flags don’t show anything and that really gets your attention.

is there a link where we could go and see these flags? i'm interrested now. today at the range i noticed when the wind stopped the bullets went crazy. it was rather warm today.

There is a thread over on the centerfire side with some good photos but they say they arn't made anymore.
