Introducing myself....

Good evening all, I'm new to BCF. This last weekend I was invited to a private shooting range. The fellas I went with had some interesting rifles that were extremely accurate. They are getting loads worked up for a trip to SD. They go varmint hunting once a year since driving from NC is such a long trip. I'm not much of a hunter but I like shooting my old surplus rifles and .22's at paper. After carefully examining the rifles they were shooting it made me realize the magnitude of attention they give their rifles. I thought I had a pretty decent .22 but it paled in comparison to what they were shooting. Now I have began to research what I need to do to assemble or build a rifle that could be accurate. I'm starting fresh and don't know much. I'm hoping you guys will help me in my quest to achieve consistent accuracy.

Welcome Jim.

As I'm sure others will recommend, you should try to attend some organized benchrest matches. Learning what you want out of this sport is best accomplished in person.

Lucky for you, Asheboro isn't far from a lot of organized benchrest matches.

Just 30 minutes down the road from you they run a monthly unsanctioned rimfire benchrest match where your .22 will fit right in. They run sporter(factory), vintage, and match classes on the first Saturday of the month. It's not uncommon to have several custom guns show up.

And 30 minutes past that is the Rocky River Benchrest Barn, arguably the best indoor facility in the USA. Where they just happen to be running the first 2010 PSL match this weekend. I think I can say with confidence that you won't find a range anywhere in the world this weekend with more custom guns than Rocky River Barn.

If you're looking to do research for a new custom gun, RRB would be the place to be this weekend.

Jim: If you can come to The Barn on Friday you might well get the chance to not only look at the rifles, but shoot one or three as well. Friday being practice day is far less intense than Saturday and Sunday when the competition takes place. Its damn serious when the match is going on, but far more relaxed on Friday. Come on down and you will learn more in a day or two than you can here in a year or more. You will also meet some tremendous people who will be more than happy to help you get started. It will be worth your time fer sure. bob finger

Thanks guys. I would love to come down and watch a shooting match. I met a few guys that belong to a shooting club in Uwharrie (Tuckertown) that shoot the first Saturday of every month.
