Ignition on Anschutz Match 64

I have had some inconsistancies and 3 mis-fires in last 1,000 rounds of match ammo (even eley black box). The descriptions of ignition problems match what I have been trying to resolve. My match 64 firing pin hits the case at an angle (not perpendicular to edge of case). In spent case, it looks tilted to 1-2 o'clock. When I look at the firing pin, indeed, it sitting tilted slightly to the left at 10-11 o'clock.
Calfree's extensive article with drawings and various posts emphize how crucial the ignition is so I am trying to improve mine.

I pulled my bolt apart and the firing pin seems like it "could" have various angle orientations. (Lemar on rimfire checked and his '64 is same)

Is there a way to get exactly straight alignment of the pin (that will stay)?

Appreciate any info/help.

Update....Firing pin appears to be made/filed at slight angle compared to how it lays against striker and bolt. Guess I need new firing pin if I want it to be perpendicular to case rim.

Regis,

Have you cleaned the insides of the bolt with brake cleaner? Sometimes the old oil will gum up and cause bad ignition.

It's not polished clean inside but, doesn't seem gummy. I will clean it better though, as you say. Cleaning can't hurt, that's for sure.

Thanks,

Scan of brass

Here is scan of firing pin impression from my '64 showing how it is canted. It is filed that way. I've ordered a new firing pin and hopfully it comes straight and square.

Also, I've tried to search for any info here on improving an Anschutz Match 64 but, the "64" gets filtered out. Is anyone using this action setup for benchrest competition?

Thanks,
Regis

Just an opinion...

I don't think the slight angle of the firing pin impression would have any effect at all on ignition or accuracy. In fact I bet you can find some shooter that will claim it has to be at that exact angle to give you the best accuracy!

As near as I can tell from the firing pin hits in the pictures, it looks fine. I doesn't seem to be hitting the fold of the rim, or lapping over the rim fold.
You may have an ammo problem if the unfired cartridge's rims looked as the ones you show pics of. Then again you spring just may be weak and sometimes not letting the pin hit as hard as it needs to.
I wouldn't worry about the angle, as long as the angle is correct, all my BR rifles have a slight angle on the pin tips to allow the inner part of the pin to contact the brass first. Seems to work ok.

Looks Too Deep

It could be, that someone had tried to improve ignition by changing to a heavier spring and may have twisted the FP while installing the spring. Too heavy a spring is just as bad as one too light.

I don't think a spring too strong is going to cause misfires. I think the poster said he experienced misfires? I may have read it incorrectly. But, that firing pin strike looks ok. If it were mine I would probably move it in a little farther from the edge, but the location looks good enough on the rim as it is.

Indeed, I have had 3 mis-fires with quality ammo (Eley match twice). I was concerned about the angle of the firing pin. It can not be installed crooked, it is simply filed at that angle. No one else seems to think that is a problem though. Because I have ordered the firing pin, I'll do that 1st. If no help, I'll replace the spring.

Thank you,
Regis

You do not want a new pin. What was done is about what Calfee has suggested. As Kent suggested you probably want to try a spring. Inside should be squeaky clean, Anschutz suggests no lube.
