If I Could Only See

Thanks for all your input on the rifle, I will be ordering the savage model 12 benchrest rifle today.

My next question is one of the scope I need. I have heard much talk about the Nightforce scope and that maybe that is the scope that I need for this benchrest rifle. I have done some looking over the internet and found the Nightforce 12-42 x 56 Precision Benchrest scope. Is this the scope must benchrest shooters are using? And if so, which Reticle should I order?

Again, I must order the right equipment the first time and not waste any cash. My eyes are also not the best, so i need a good clear scope.

If this is not the best scope for what I need, please tell me what others are using

Thanks

Scope choice

Muleskinner: I have no solid information on scopes used by the majority of Benchrest shooters, there are so many excellent choices out there. Leupold, Sightron, Weaver, March, and Nightforce, but I recently bought a Nightforce 12-42x Benchrest with the NP-2DD reticle and am very happy with it. My eyes at 71 yrs. are not the best anymore but have less problems with the NF when compared to my older Leupold's at 24x and 36x. Before making a decision try finding someone using the one you are interested in and spend a few minutes with it. They are a quality scope.

Muleskinner,

Are there any weight limits in the category of shooting that you are getting into with that Savage you told us you've decided on? Though I use a Nightforce BR scope myself on a long range rifle, it's a fair bit heavier than the average scope that those in the benchrest game use. Heck, it's heavier than about any other breed of scope you could name, by a healthy margin.

At this point i am not sure about weight limits, the only rules i have seen on the clubs website about Production class is "Any production rifle which has not been rebarreled. Remingtons of various calibers and Savages in 223 or 22-250 are common and do very well. High power scopes are common." That is all that is said. I have asked our range officer about what rifles would be allowed in production class and he told the there was one person using the rifle i just ordered today, but he didnt say anything about weight or the scope. I must assume by what is said on the website that there is no weight limit for production rifles, they just must have the factory barrel.

I have checked the calendar and it looks like there is a benchrest match this weekend at my club, so i am sure i might ride up there and snoop around a bit. I do not know anyone at my club who shoots benchrest so i hope to meet some of the guys this weekend. Everyone at my club has been very friendly and willing to help out if you need advice except for one elitist jerk who i guess felt too important to speak. I guess every club has one or two of those.

Anyway guys i really appreciate the help and the advice. My rifle should be here in about 2 weeks and then i gotta start learning to hand load for benchrest, and i need to find a buddy at Sinclair. Lol
