Back a just few years ago, my buddies and I had many heated debates about the merits of the 270 vs the 280 vs the 30/06 vs Elmer Keith's cannons vs Roy Weatherby's rockets.
Now you must understand that at that time none of us had ever seen a 270, maybe a sporterized 03A3 30/06, a Weatherby rifle was something from the moon and Elmer's stuff was as unknown as Mars. We were poor boys with a 22 and maybe a shotgun if Daddy was able to afford one.
But we "knew" it all. We could spout ballastics until the cows came home, were certain that .007 inch in diameter made one bullet deadly while another was just barely a good varmint round. The drop at 500 yards was a must know thing (we didn't know how far 500 yards was) and that 1 inch less drop was magic.
Now, I wonder just how many posters here and on other forums are the same way. Well read, but almost totally in the dark about what they are posting.
How many really know how small an eighth of an inch is and how far 100 yards is?
