I dont understand how die shims work. The sinclare die shims say you can bump in .001 incraments but I dont see how. If you have .003,.004,.005,.006.007,.008,.009.010 and you want to bump your shoulder .001 how do you do that.

If I took out .003 shim I would get .003 to much bump, if you take out .004 that would be to much bump. How do you use these shims to only take out .001 bump.

I can see if I needed to move my die up for less bump how to use them but not the other way around.

This hillbilly just dont get it.

Why dont they just make .001 shims and be done with it.

I have read just about eveything I could find on the subject, and its all to vague on how people use them.

well, to increase...

the bump .001, replace the .004 with the .003

How Die shims work

Start with a mid thickness shim, a .006 or .007. Adjust the lock ring on your die to get close to what you need, and then switch to a thicker or thinner shim to make small changes. I suspect that the reason they don't make .001 or .002 shims is that they tend to wrinkle and tear when you tighten the die.

You want to adjust your die by measuring your shoulders for about .001" bump with a shim in place, say a 6 thou one. Then if you need to fine tune, you just go up or down shim sizes by what your calipers and shoulder measuring device indicate over time.

You have to be able to measure the shoulder from the base of the case to the shoulder. Use one of the following. Chamber gizzy. Cut off a small piece of barrel have both ends level and flat, cut a partial chamber in one end. I don't use a pair of calipers, I use a Micrometer depending on the length of the case. Buy a box of multiple mics, they are cheap.

Mine cost under 30.00 and there are 5 or 6 of the things. O-1", 1-2", 2-3",3-4", 4-5" and 5-6" I know this will be hard to believe, but some of them never get used.:D

Larry Willis has a tool you can use for just about any ctg that will give you the shoulder length.http://www.larrywillis.com/

I have been using a stony point head space gage to measure the shoulder. I will look into the Chamber gizzy when I order a new barrel for my rifle. I have a old barrel that came with the rifle, I could prolly use that to make a bunch of Gizzys when Im ready to.
