HSS tooling?

I just bought this and was wondering if it is good stuff? I have been reading that the HSS is better for the small lathes so I bought some of these. I got almost 20 pcs for under $40. The small ones are 1/2" and a couple are 5/8". Figured they had to be better than the cheap import stuff.

Be sure to keep them nice and cool as you do your grinding. Grind, dip, grind, dip, etc. Don't let them turn colors and try not to cheat on that.

For certain things, especially light cuts, HSS has lots of advantages.

As to "is it good stuff?", no doubt it is just fine. I'm sure you'll be happy with them. If they don't work for a particular purpose, it's probably more because of the angles at which it's ground, than the materials it's made from.

These tools are especially nice if you ever do work on your brass in a lathe.

YUP . . good stuff . .

If by any chance you don't like them, I'll take them . . . :D REX AAA used to be the best of the bunch for High Speed Tools, and the rest of them are right up there with it. Vascomax is the best for HSS tools, I hoard all I can find when I find them. As the guy says, don't burn the tips when grind them, keep them cool. If it starts to turn blue, dunk it. . . An empty PLASTIC coffee container is about the best thing to put water into for doing that.
