That still leaves a lot of wriggle room. For example - NBRSA 3 target relay - 1st target, 5 to 10 sighters, 2nd target, 1 or 2 sighters, 3rd target, maybe only 1 sighter depending on conditions.

You can also learn a lot by watching the sighters on benches on either side of you.

Cheechako I think he just needs to know on the first target. Sounds like you don't clean after each target , I have only one rifle that likes that.

I would say IBS, since most local clubs follow IBS rules. This is just to get a general idea what you use for the first target. I should have been more specific.

Depending on conditions most generally 1-5... on a switchy day or for a score shoot-off 6-10.

The poll choices might have been better if they were just 1-10 and >10. I'm thinking >10 would be 0%. I usually take 7 to a match, but have 3 for emergency. I usually shoot 3 or 4 any more. Sometimes only one on paper satisfied me. But then, that also means you have to trust the gun. If I didn't trust the gun, then I was more likely to shoot 7-9 and sorta pick the center of the mess as the place to shoot for score. With a gun that really shoots, 2 is enough. 1 fouler at 6 min, 1 for vertical at 5 sec.

From a clean, slightly oiled bore it takes me four shots to get the velocity up and the vertical out. With a 30 cal mid-mag, the first shot will be 12-15" low and the second about 6" low compared to where the group forms up. I reserve vertical scope adjustment with this in mind. Then three shots in the last minute of the sight in period to bracket for best score.
Once the rifle is fouled (for shoot-offs or second matches of the day I try to limit myself to 4-5 sighters and seem to enjoy a little tighter groups than if I shoot more. If conditions allow, three sighters in a fouled barrel is good. I've never had the poise to shoot just two like Phil. But I usually did better in score aggs than in group. Maybe this is why.

Greg,

I'd usually be more on the order of 4 as well. But if it was really windy, I'd go with 2. Sometimes never even on paper even though it could be marked if I did. I had pretty good luck with score as well, and I'd say 75% of the time, I'd go from the 5:45 point to 0:45 without sending a shot. Those never told me anything anyhow. And if it was changing, there wasn't much I could do about it anyhow.

I never oiled a barrel. Mine were shot dry, so shot one was usually dead on where the next one was going. Again, that's IF I trusted the gun. In cases where I didn't, well, that didn't work out so well, but, who ever won with a gun that sucked anyhow. :D

I've shot very little since they changed the sight in rules up here (which I thought was a crock of __). LIke, it's just Sooooooo much work to actually mark the target. Build new pits, and don't mark the damn target anyhow. Brilliant eh? I don't even want to get started!

I've won a score shootoff with one sighter. Shot a 100 with 2. But in both cases, I'd admit there may have been luck involved. :p
